Robin Wright has reflected on the difficulties of parenting with her now ex husband Sean Penn.
In 2007, the actress (who was then 59 years old) parted ways with Sean. They reconciled for some time but eventually finalized their divorce in 2010. Both of them are parents to Dylan Frances Penn, aged 34, and Hopper Jack Penn, who is 32.
She shared in a recent interview that she faced challenges raising him due to his frequent absences for work, making him a more challenging presence in their lives.
She shared with The Times, “He was often away, leaving me with the leftovers after he returned, functioning as a policeman.
Afterward, I’d try to make it less harsh. We were both polar opposites, but they seemed to overlook the middle ground – a balance between firmness and leniency – which was exactly what they required.
Throughout his life, Hopper has been open about the challenges he’s encountered, particularly his struggle with crystal meth addiction. Remarkably, his father played a crucial role in helping him overcome this issue.

According to an interview with ES Magazine, Hopper had stated earlier: “I was involved in many things, but it was meth that proved most detrimental. I sought treatment after finding myself in a hospital, and when my father asked me between rehab or a bus stop bench, I chose the former.
I’m grateful for having escaped from that ordeal, as it was undoubtedly the most challenging period in my life. Life can be unpleasant when things escalate to such an extent that all one can desire is relief.
Dylan has worked as a model and an actress following in her parents’ footsteps.
In 1990, they first encountered each other while filming State of Grace, but their relationship was not consistently stable until tying the knot in 1996.
As their relationship made headlines, they chose to reside in a quaint town close to San Francisco. In this new setting, Robin decided to prioritize motherhood over her acting career.
Reflecting on my journey as a parent, I can honestly say that I stand by the choices I made. Yet, with the wisdom of hindsight, there are aspects I wish I could revisit and handle differently. Raising children is an intricate dance of love, guidance, and learning – a dance I would’ve danced more gracefully given another chance.
She commented on the piece: ‘As their mother, I harbor deep remorse, and it has affected our relationship for a long time – I should have been stricter with them.’
The exes started dating in 1989, and were wed from 1996 to 2010.

Sean and Robin have a history of splitting up and getting back together.
They wed in 1996 then planned on divorcing in December 2007 but called it off four months later.
In April 2009, they parted ways once more, but chose to hold off on submitting their papers until the next month. However, Robin took the initiative to submit the divorce papers in August 2009, and their divorce was officially concluded in July 2010.
Robin and Sean began a relationship in 1989 following his divorce from Madonna.
Sean was married to Australian actress Leila George, 31, from 2020 to 2022.
Born and raised in Santa Monica, California, this individual first appeared on the big screen in the 1981 movie “Taps,” a production that also featured George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton, Ronny Cox, and a young Tom Cruise.
Sean has won Oscars for his roles in the 2003 mystery drama Mystic River and the 2008 biopic Milk.
