Robert Picardo reveals why he was brought in for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and it makes total sense

As a long-time Trekkie who has witnessed Picardo’s illustrious journey within the Star Trek universe since its inception, I must say that his return to the franchise is nothing short of thrilling! The man has truly become an emblem of Starfleet, gracing not one, not two, but FOUR shows, numerous video games, a film, and even a theme park ride!

Currently, Robert Picardo is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in his career. At 71 years old, this skilled actor is re-entering the franchise after an absence of over two decades. His live-action comeback to the franchise is scheduled for the anticipated 2026 launch of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. In this upcoming production, he’ll revive his character, The Doctor, a role that he has played extensively, appearing in close to 200 episodes.

He featured in 164 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, along with an additional 17 episodes in Star Trek: Prodigy. Notably, Prodigy marked his comeback to the franchise since Voyager concluded in 2001. However, unlike his time at Starfleet Academy, this wasn’t live-action. Instead, he lent his voice to Star Trek for the first time in many years with Prodigy.

Before his role in Prodigy, the last occasion he lent his voice to the series was for Star Trek Online back in 2014.

Man, I gotta say, it’s clear as day that Picardo has put in some serious effort when it comes to Star Trek. From being part of four different shows (Prodigy, Starfleet Academy, Voyager, and Deep Space Nine), to popping up in various video games, a movie like First Contact, and even a theme park ride, the guy’s got quite the resume!

He has extensive experience and is easily identifiable, making him an ideal choice for Starfleet Academy. As reported by TVO Today’s The Agenda via TrekMovie.com, Picardo shared that he was recruited to connect the past and future generations.

I am a bridge. Our executive producer Alex Kurtzman has said, “You’re the bridge between the past of Star Trek and the future,” and that touched me to hear that. Yeah, I do feel that it’s a responsibility of a saga that has meant so much to now three generations… we’re working on three generations that find some kind of solace and comfort in the fact that humanity will not only have a future that far out, but that it will be a positive one.

Despite Kurtzman receiving criticism for many aspects during his tenure, it’s not accurate to claim he’s erred on every decision. His work, such as Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and potentially Starfleet Academy, demonstrates a strong vision. Furthermore, Kurtzman is correct in stating that Picardo serves as a bridge between generations in Starfleet Academy.

Among the primary attractions will be him, as his acts on Voyager and Prodigy stand out as among the finest in the series’ entire run, and it’s expected that he’ll infuse a similar level of passion into Starfleet Academy.
