With James Gunn reimagining the DC Universe, fans are still discussing who should play Batman in the new films. Although The Brave and the Bold movie is still being made, many viewers hope to see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Batman alongside David Corenswet’s Superman in the shared universe.
At a ScreenRant panel during Motor City Comic Con 2025, horror director Mike Flanagan discussed the possibility of Robert Pattinson continuing as Batman in the DC Universe. This conversation happened while talking about Flanagan’s upcoming film focusing on the character Clayface. He said, “Absolutely, yeah, but I have to be careful. I know DC fans are passionate, and I don’t want to upset anyone, especially with James Gunn now leading DC in a new direction, which I think is fantastic.”
Flanagan admitted he wasn’t aware of future plans for the Batman franchise, but praised Matt Reeves as a highly talented director. He also stated that he thought Robert Pattinson’s performance as Batman in 2022 was outstanding.
He was also very complimentary of Matt Reeves’ Batman films, saying he loved the world Reeves created and thought The Penguin character worked well both in movies and on TV. Flanagan believes there’s a way to bring all these different versions of DC characters together, and that James Gunn is currently working towards that goal.
Flanagan expressed his confidence in James, stating he’s always been a satisfied fan and is eager to see how the new project turned out and how all the pieces fit together. He acknowledged that the filmmakers have creative freedom in how they connect everything. Regarding his involvement with the Clayface movie, he shared that he’s simply thankful for the opportunity to contribute, even in a small way, to the world of Gotham, which has been a lifelong dream.

James Gunn has announced that the first phase of the DC Universe will introduce a new Batman, separate from Robert Pattinson’s recent films, which will exist as standalone stories. Because the script for the upcoming film, The Brave and the Bold, is still being written, they haven’t begun casting for the role yet.
Production on The Batman – Part II is scheduled to start in 2026, with the movie expected to be released on October 1, 2027. Fans of the DC Universe won’t have to wait that long to see a new side of Gotham City, though – filming on Clayface recently finished on November 1, 2025, according to actor Tom Rhys Harries.
Clayface opens in theaters on September 11, 2026.
