Robert Pattinson’s New Movie Is Secretly a Rom-Com
Despite my initial intention to catch “Mickey 17” in theaters earlier this year, unforeseen circumstances prevented me from doing so. What a pity! The big-screen adaptation of Bong Joon-ho’s innovative sci-fi novel, hailed as one of the most captivating in recent years, was a film I simply had to see on the largest screen available. Unfortunately, I missed out. However, I made sure not to repeat my error when it became available for streaming, eager to immerse myself in its story on a smaller screen.
It came as quite a surprise to me that the fantastic sci-fi movie, Mickey 17, would not only prove to be an outstanding piece of science fiction but also one of the most delightful romantic comedies I’ve seen in recent years. In all honesty, before watching it, I anticipated that the 2025 film would offer a mix of dark comedy and tackle some heavy themes as is common in Bong’s other masterpieces. However, I never expected the new Robert Pattinson production to be a heartwarming rom-com available for streaming with a Max subscription. Allow me to elaborate…
By opting for the annual plans, you can save up to $41 with Max, as they offer discounts that range up to 16%. If you prefer paying monthly, their lowest-priced plan begins at just $9.99 per month. Check out the deal now!

Mickey And Nasha’s Romance Is At The Core Of Mickey 17
Initially, “Mickey 17” appears to be the space adventure of Mickey Barnes (played exceptionally by Robert Pattinson), a man pushed into space to escape a significant debt on Earth, without fully understanding the consequences. However, as events progress and the bond between Mickey and Nasha Barridge (Naomi Ackie) deepens, this quirky satire unexpectedly transforms into a thought-provoking and non-traditional romantic comedy.
In this narrative, as hurdles and intricacies (such as Mickey’s repeated deaths and resurrections altering their bond) surface, these characters demonstrate an unwavering devotion to each other. This emotional depth adds a unique charm to the darkly humorous tale. Each action is motivated by their love for one another, which, surprisingly, was not a trait I anticipated in Bong Joon-ho’s subsequent work following his Oscar-winning thriller “Parasite.” However, that’s what makes it captivating, doesn’t it?

Spotting Rom-Com Tropes In A Bong Joon-Ho Movie Wasn’t On My 2025 Bingo Card
In an unexpected twist, the film Mickey 17 explores a variety of classic romantic comedy elements, such as an unusual love triangle, resisting advances from potential suitors, creative love scenes, and two lovers making extraordinary efforts to be together – all quite uncommon in a Bong Joon-ho production. Frankly, I wouldn’t have guessed this mix of tropes would appear in his work, let alone on my 2025 bingo card.
This film not only includes typical science fiction elements, space travel conventions, and the director’s unique sarcastic style, but it also blends romantic comedy tropes, which seems incredibly odd when written down.

Don’t Get Me Wrong, It’s Still Very Much A Sci-Fi Flick
The movie titled Mickey 17 can be classified as a science fiction film with a multi-layered narrative. It delves into various themes such as the ethics of human cloning, man’s insatiable hunger for power and dominance, and the possibility of space travel. This thought-provoking dark comedy masterfully combines action, extraordinary technology, and adorable yet frightening alien beings, making it an enjoyable experience for viewers.
In this film, the science fiction aspects don’t detract from the central love story; instead, the relationship between Mickey and Nasha enhances every scene.
To put it simply, I didn’t anticipate watching a Bong Joon-ho sci-fi film would provide me with one of the most delightful romantic comedy experiences of the year. Yet, here I am, recommending you all to appreciate this movie (even if you only give it a try).
