Robert Ovadia: Sacked Channel Seven reporter announces his next move after being dumped by the network

As an ardent admirer of Robert Ovadia‘s illustrious career spanning over two decades at Seven Network, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent turn of events. A man who has won two Walkley Awards, a stalwart on-air talent, and a mentor to many young journalists, finds himself in the midst of an unfair investigation.

Former reporter Robert Ovadia, who was let go from the network due to claims of inappropriate conduct, has initiated a lawsuit against both the network and its head of news in the Federal Court several months later.

Mr Ovadia, who has worked at Seven for more than 20 years, was dismissed from his role in June.

When the news reported that an investigation was being conducted regarding claims of inappropriate actions made against Mr. Ovadia, he strongly asserts his innocence.

On a late Friday, Mr. Ovadia initiated legal action in the Federal Court towards The Seven Network and their news head, Anthony De Ceglie.

He is being represented by John Laxon of the Sydney-based firm Laxon Lex.

Attempts were made to contact Mr Laxon on Sunday night.

A representative from Seven declined to comment specifically on whether Mr. Ovadia has initiated a lawsuit against them, given that the case is currently being heard at the Federal Court. However, they confirmed that Seven will vigorously defend their stance in this situation.

‘As previously noted, Robert Ovadia no longer works at Seven.’

Seven approaches any accusations suggesting unsuitable conduct in the workplace with utmost gravity.

‘We manage allegations confidentially and deal with any substantiated breaches decisively.’

Mr. Ovadia, who had previously won the Walkley Award twice, was a seasoned broadcast professional. He worked for the network as both an investigative journalist and a relief presenter in the Sydney newsroom, until his dismissal.

In a counterstatement following Seven’s declaration about the probe, Mr. Ovadia declared he would protect himself against the ‘unfounded’ accusations.

‘Seven has told me no current or former colleague has made any complaint against me,’ he said.

‘As far as I am aware, I have not been stood down by the company.

I want to clarify that any claim suggesting I’ve acted inappropriately is completely unfounded, harmful, and I am prepared to vigorously refute it.

Mr Ovadia posted numerous messages of encouragement from various coworkers on his Instagram account following the announcement of the investigation.

One message, posted on his recent post, expresses gratitude for his expert advice, his heartfelt warmth, and genuine kindness.

Another acknowledges him for being ‘one of my biggest supporters throughout my journalism career’.

‘His admirable qualities of respect, honesty, and kindness have not only established him as a trustworthy guide, but also someone I can comfortably turn to for guidance whenever needed, making him more than just a mentor – he’s a true friend.’

He always showed great courtesy and professionalism towards me and other young women he collaborated with, consistently embodying the epitome of respect and decorum.
