Robert Irwin delivers ‘the best first dance’ Derek Hough has seen on ‘DWTS’

It looks like wowing the judges on “Dancing With the Stars” is now an Irwin family tradition.

Robert Irwin danced on “Dancing With the Stars” for the first time on Tuesday, performing an energetic jive to “Born to Be Wild” with his partner Witney Carson. Immediately after finishing, he rushed to embrace his sister, Bindi Irwin, who was watching from the audience with their family and friends.

The judges called the performance, which closed out the night, “absolutely brilliant.”

September is here, and the new cast for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ has been announced! This year’s dancers include Hilaria Baldwin, Corey Feldman, and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles.

Before his performance, Robert Irwin joked that Crocs are his preferred footwear, not dancing shoes. The introductory video also showed Carson Kressley explaining that a jive is a challenging first dance, but he complimented Irwin’s upbeat attitude.

Bruno Tonioli was the first judge to react, jumping up to tell Irwin that their performance wasn’t just good-it was fantastic.

Derek Hough, Bindi’s professional dance partner when they won “Dancing With the Stars” in Season 21, told Robert he was glad Robert was able to successfully take on the challenge of following in Bindi’s footsteps.

Wow, seeing Irwin dance was incredible! Hough said it wasn’t just that he *did* the dance, but that he completely *owned* it – like he’d been preparing for this moment for a decade! Honestly, Hough even said it was the best first dance he’d *ever* seen on the show, and I totally agree. It was magical!

Robert Irwin, following in his father Steve Irwin’s footsteps, is appearing in an underwear ad campaign. Now 21 years old, he’s officially grown up.

Earlier in the show, Irwin recalled watching his sister win a decade ago and thinking, “Someday, I’ll be up there too.”

Watching Bindi win in 2015 also served as preparation for Robert.

Irvin shared with E! News that he had a pretty good idea of what to expect from the show, since his sister had participated before. Bindi advised him to ‘take a breath and enjoy every single second,’ emphasizing how quickly the experience would pass.

Irwin and Carson received a score of 15, tying them with Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas for the highest score.
