I was so saddened to hear about the passing of Robert Duvall on February 16, 2026. He was a true icon, and I’ve been watching his incredible work for as long as I can remember. Movies like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Apostle, and even To Kill a Mockingbird – he just made every film better. He’ll be deeply missed, but his films will live on forever.
Robert Duvall had an incredibly decorated career, winning an Oscar, four Golden Globes, two Emmys, a BAFTA, and numerous other awards. He began to slow down his work in the 2020s, taking on fewer roles. His last two performances were in 2022, in two excellent Netflix films that deserved wider recognition.
Robert Duvall Is In Hustle, One Of Adam Sandler’s Best Movies
One of Robert Duvall’s final films was Hustle, which features Adam Sandler in a surprisingly serious role. Sandler plays an NBA scout who finds a promising young player in Spain and dedicates himself to getting him ready for the NBA Draft. Like his performance in Uncut Gems, Sandler received a lot of positive attention for his work in this movie.
Robert Duvall plays Rex Merrick, the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, in the movie Hustle. He’s friendly with Adam Sandler’s character, Stanley Sugerman, but when Merrick’s son inherits the team, he fires Stanley, which kicks off the film’s main events.
Though a minor role, Duvall delivered a fantastic performance as he always does. His scenes with Sandler felt natural and genuinely showed a connection between their characters. Hustle was popular on Netflix when it was released, but it’s surprisingly faded from memory despite being a worthwhile film.
The Pale Blue Eye Is Duvall’s Final Film Role
Despite being made in 2022, the movie The Pale Blue Eye wasn’t released on Netflix until early 2023. It also marks the final performance in the remarkable career of Robert Duvall. Based on a novel from 2006, the film centers around a seasoned detective investigating a string of murders, aided by a young military student and aspiring writer named Edgar Allan Poe.
Like his part in Hustle, Duvall doesn’t have a huge role here, but it’s a significant one. He plays Jean Pepe, a specialist in the occult and an expert on the history of Satanism. He’s vital to solving the case and shares some compelling scenes with Christian Bale, creating a dynamic pairing.
While reviews for The Pale Blue Eye were somewhat mixed, it’s a captivating mystery with a fantastic cast. Christian Bale, Gillian Anderson, Harry Melling, Lucy Boynton, and others star alongside a memorable final performance by Robert Duvall.
