Robert Duvall was born in San Diego, California, in January 1931, the son of a Navy rear admiral. He was initially encouraged to follow his father into military service, and did serve in the Army during the Korean War. However, he eventually decided to pursue a career in film instead.

He once told People: ‘I was terrible at everything but acting — I could barely get through school.’

He trained as an actor at Principia College in Illinois before moving to New York City. There, he honed his skills at the Neighborhood Playhouse, alongside future stars like Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and James Caan.

Robert Duvall first gained recognition for his work on stage, performing in plays like A View from the Bridge and Wait Until Dark.

He went on to star in popular films like Bullitt and True Grit, and received critical acclaim for his work in MAS*H.

Robert Duvall became famous for playing Tom Hagen in the 1972 film The Godfather, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination. He then played the same character again in the 1974 sequel.

In 1979, he starred as Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic war film, Apocalypse Now.

Robert Duvall received the Best Actor Oscar in 1983 for his performance as a washed-up country singer struggling with alcoholism in the movie Tender Mercies.
