Robert Downey Jr turned down a Deadpool & Wolverine cameo

As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book lore under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia tinged with disappointment upon hearing about Robert Downey Jr turning down a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. The thought of Iron Man and the Merc with a Mouth sharing the screen was a tantalizing prospect that seemed almost too good to be true.

In an interesting disclosure, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shared that Robert Downey Jr declined an opportunity to make a brief appearance in the movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine.

Just last month, I was left stunned at San Diego Comic-Con when none other than the guy who used to suit up as Iron Man dropped a bombshell. Turns out, he’s coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time he’ll be stepping into the shoes of the villainous Victor Von Doom – you know him better as Doctor Doom in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday.

In a conversation with IndieWire, Reese and Wernick shared that they didn’t know about Downey Jr’s new part and invited him to be a part of the newest Deadpool movie instead.

Wernick stated that they had hoped for a brief appearance from him, but unbeknownst to us, there was a Doctor Doom role in the works as well. It was unlikely that he would take on both roles.

Afterward, we remarked, “Surely Downey doesn’t refuse Ryan Reynolds, does he? Nobody refuses Ryan Reynolds.” And as expected, Ryan put on the pressure. We drafted scenes for him to act upon, and Downey went through them, but what was hidden from our view during that time was the Doctor Doom situation.

Reese remarked, “As far as I can recall, Downey was the only actor who outright declined a role, simply stating, ‘I don’t feel like participating.'”

In further details, it was disclosed that the team intended to bring Robert Downey Jr. onto the set as Tony Stark, where he would interact with Jon Favreau’s character, Happy Hogan. The conversation between them would center around the doubts they had about Deadpool’s capacity to work well within a team.

“The situation I’m referring to was quite similar to what you observed. The main difference is that there were two individuals involved, rather than one.”

“Things turned out wonderfully. Don’t get me wrong, we would have welcomed Downey, but Marvel seems to have saved a trump card – he is set to reappear in another role soon. So, having him as Tony Stark when Doctor Doom was on the horizon just didn’t fit logically.”

Wernick hinted at an initial draft where the Avengers had initially rejected Deadpool. In this version, the mercenary became enraged and responded aggressively towards them in a fierce manner.

It’s not just Downey Jr; even Reynolds was close to having another star, Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Johnny Blaze from Ghost Rider, join in a cameo.

In the third action-packed installment of the Deadpool franchise, Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, and Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, join forces to combat an evil entity that endangers the entire galaxy.

In a marvelous gathering, Deadpool and Wolverine brought together various Marvel stars who had previously appeared, both before and after the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among them was Chris Evans, reprising his role as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch.

Additionally, the movie features brief appearances of Wesley Snipes portraying Blade, Dafne Keen stepping into the role of Laura/X-23, Jennifer Garner reprising her character Elektra, and Channing Tatum donning the role of Remy LeBeau/Gambit.

Deadpool & Wolverine is out now in cinemas.
