Robert Downey Jr. reveals how Kevin Feige persuaded him to return as Doctor Doom

As a seasoned movie buff with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom is a masterstroke of epic proportions. The intrigue surrounding this transformation has been a rollercoaster ride, much like the thrilling journeys we’ve embarked on in our favorite Marvel films.

In simpler terms, Robert Downey Jr. discussed how producer Kevin Feige convinced him to rejoin the Marvel universe and play the character Doctor Doom.

According to Downey’s statement on Tuesday, he discussed with Marvel Studios leadership about the possibility of him reprising his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), even though his previous character, Tony Stark aka Iron Man, was killed off in “Avengers: Endgame” last year.

Downey shared with the Hollywood Reporter: “‘It’s always crossing my mind,’ he said about a potential return, “‘How can we not revisit the past? How can we not fall short of expectations? How can we keep surpassing them?’ He even mentioned Victor Von Doom. I did some research on this character, and later he stated, ‘We need to get Victor Von Doom right.'”

One of Marvel’s toughest antagonists, Doom, is set to have a significant impact on the next stage of the Avengers movies as well as the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the Marvel comic books, he is often pitted against the Fantastic Four as their main enemy.

At first, Downey aimed to talk with Bob Iger from Disney about potentially contributing to their parks and immersive entertainment. The news about Downey’s role in expanding theme parks was made public earlier this month during Disney’s D23 event. At the convention, it was announced that Downey, who is 59 years old, would be joining the cast for two new attractions at Disneyland’s California Adventure park.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I, too, had been privy to the captivating idea of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Hearing this intriguing prospect, my approval echoed that of Iger himself! With uncontainable excitement, I swiftly orchestrated a tour for Downey and Feige at our very own Imagineering campus in Glendale, offering them a glimpse into the ongoing marvels that were being brought to life.

As a film enthusiast myself, I must say it’s rare to find something that leaves two skeptical souls like us in awe, but the magic being crafted by the Imagineers surpasses anything I could have ever imagined as possible.

It was at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego that it was unveiled that Downey would be playing Doom. Feige returned to the renowned Hall H on July 28 to publicize Marvel Studios’ future projects, displaying sneak peeks and more. The event highlighted releases scheduled for 2025, such as “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and a few “Avengers” movies. During the presentation, a group of men wearing Doom costumes appeared on stage, and one of them unmasked to reveal Downey.

“Downey announced a new role, but the mission remains the same,” he shared with the crowd. “I must admit, I relish portraying intricate personalities.”
