Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man again—for Disney’s big Avengers land rides
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of immersive experiences under my belt, I must say that the Marvel Theme Park Universe is taking the concept of “living the dream” to a whole new level. Robert Downey Jr., who has donned both Iron Man’s suit and Doctor Doom’s armor, is truly the king of the Marvel multiverse.
As a passionate Marvel fan and gaming enthusiast, I’ve been pondering: How much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can one gamer truly embrace? Robert Downey Jr., who’s been tapped to play Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, is on a similar quest. Yet, even with this exciting role ahead, he’s not slowing down. Instead, Downey Jr. has just secured his next mission as Iron Man – at a brand-new attraction for Disney’s Avengers Campus, nestled within the California Adventure park in Anaheim.
During the 2024 D23 Expo on Saturday evening, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced that the nearby Avengers Campus in Disneyland would expand significantly over the next few years, adding two new rides that evoke the nostalgia of the era following Avengers: Endgame. The COVID-19 pandemic had previously caused delays, but the Avengers Campus only opened in 2021 with just two initial attractions: the Web Slingers, an interactive Spider-Man ride on screens, and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout, a converted drop ride from Tower of Terror. This expansion represents a significant investment in a park that is expected to be a cornerstone of the contemporary parks era. Additionally, Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark will appear in both attractions.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited about the upcoming Stark Flight Lab experience! This indoor ride will simulate flying around Tony Stark’s lab using advanced robot arms. Ever wondered if you could handle the thrill of soaring in Mark IV armor without getting queasy? Well, here’s your chance to put that to the test! Of course, it’s none other than Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark who will be our fearless guide on this exhilarating journey. Can’t wait to give it a spin!
The long-awaited Avengers Infinity Defense, first hinted at in 2022, is now becoming a reality. This immersive, mobile screen ride takes viewers on a thrilling journey where they join the Avengers in battling a multiversal version of King Thanos, causing chaos across dimensions. As Disney puts it, “Recruits will visit famous locations like Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City, fighting alongside both major and minor heroes.” You’ll even see Downey Jr. in action here too.
Disney hasn’t set a specific date for the launch of the new rides yet, but they confirmed that construction will commence early in 2025. However, the design phase is already progressing smoothly – so much so that Downey Jr. has even had a trial run with the Stark Flight Plan pods! A sneak peek of this was shared at D23, and Downey Jr. looks absolutely elated (or perhaps he’s contemplating his growing boat collection, given his roles as both Doctor Doom in films and Tony Stark in the Marvel Theme Park Universe – a collection that could certainly expand).
