Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans Reunite at Oscars 2026

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, two of the biggest stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently met up. This get-together is happening as both actors prepare to reprise their roles in the new Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans shared the stage to announce the winners for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay. Downey began by highlighting the importance of screenwriting, calling it a particularly strong year for writers. Evans playfully interrupted, asking what gift Downey had gotten him. Evans then revealed Downey had given him a signed copy of the Avengers script, and Evans reciprocated with a valet receipt.

The MCU Stars Presented Two Oscars

After their appearance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe actors announced the winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. Paul Thomas Anderson won for One Battle After Another. The other nominees were Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro), Hamnet (Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell), Bugonia (Will Tracy), and Train Dreams (Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar).

Before announcing the winner for Best Original Screenplay, Robert Downey Jr. playfully handed Chris Evans a pair of sparkly underwear he wore in Magic Mike. Channing Tatum, who was watching, jokingly called out that he needed the underwear back for an upcoming job. Downey and Evans then revealed that Ryan Coogler had won the award for Sinners, beating out nominees Robert Kaplow (Blue Moon), Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident), Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme), and Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value).

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans Are Back in the MCU

Robert Downey Jr. seemed to hint at his upcoming role as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the Oscars, where he wore a dark green suit. The announcement of him taking on this villainous role at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 was unexpected. While Downey is famously known for playing Iron Man (Tony Stark) in the MCU until the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame (2019), it’s thought the multiverse will allow him to play one of Marvel’s biggest villains in Doomsday. Specific details about the plot are still under wraps.

The news that Chris Evans would reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday was a surprise, especially since Avengers: Endgame depicted an older, retired Steve Rogers who appeared to have finished his time as Captain America. The character had also been passed on to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, in Captain America: Brave New World. Unlike Robert Downey Jr., who is said to be playing a variant of his character, Evans is expected to return as the original Steve Rogers, though the details of his role are still a mystery.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
