The enchanting fantasy adventure film titled “Dolittle,” featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Sheen, has moved up to the sixth spot on Netflix’s global rankings and is currently the seventh most-viewed movie in the United Kingdom.
In 2020, the movie that debuted was labeled as one of the year’s major flops at the box office by Forbes, and it garnered unfavorable critiques from film reviewers.
Presently, the movie “Dolittle” has a rating of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, following 241 reviews. When it first came out, “Newsday” labeled it as an “extravagantly staged yet uncharming rendition of the beloved children’s stories.
Empire Magazine described the film as a generally uninspired children’s movie, which fails to develop a clear and distinctive voice, whether human or non-human.
Instead, The Arizona Republic stated that although the film may not achieve cult status, it is expected to engage and captivate its younger audience.

In the Victorian period, this movie tells the story of Dr. John Dolittle, played by Downey Jr., who is a vet with a unique talent – he can communicate with animals. When Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley) takes ill, our hero and his animal companions embark on a voyage to a legendary island in search of a remedy for her illness.
Boasting a star-studded ensemble, Dolittle boasts the talents of Antonio Banderas, Jim Broadbent, and Harry Collett in live action roles. Meanwhile, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Selena Gomez, John Cena, Tom Holland, and Ralph Fiennes provide voices for Dolittle’s animal friends.

In response to the movie’s poor reception from critics and audiences alike, Downey Jr. shared with The New York Times that making Dolittle held significant importance for him.
Among the films I’ve created in the past 25 years, “Dolittle” stands out as the second most significant to me, for it represented a prolonged period of about two and a half years that could have been utilized more effectively. He expressed this sentiment himself.
The strain it caused for my producer Susan, who had to roll up her sleeves all the way to her armpits to ensure it could be sold, was quite surprising. From then on, you might say she made the most of the situation, turning a difficult time into an opportunity.
“We had this reset of priorities and made some changes in who our closest business advisers were.”
Dolittle is now available to stream on Netflix.
