Today marks the 81st birthday of the renowned actor from Taxi Driver, and his daughter, Drena De Niro, aged 56, took to social media to share some special photographs in celebration of this momentous occasion.
The first showed him in red-and-blue striped swim trunks jumping off a yacht.
The second was a short video clip that reveals his impact with the water.
As someone who has had the privilege of growing up with a loving and supportive father like mine, I can truly appreciate the heartfelt message in this social media post. On July 2, 2023, Leandro was tragically discovered deceased by a friend, seated in a chair within his apartment in New York City, at the tender age of 19.
The medical examiner determined his demise was due to an unintentional overdose from a mix of harmful substances, which included illicit drugs such as fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine, and cocaine.
Currently, De Niro’s youngest child, Gia, celebrated her first birthday. She shares this toddler with her mother, Tiffany Chen, who is 45 years old.
The Goodfellas star reflected on becoming a father again in his 80s with AARP The Magazine.
‘I’m an 80-year-old dad and it’s great,’ he told the outlet in January.
When I gaze upon [Gia], all my concerns and preoccupations seem to vanish, creating a sense of awe. Simply put, it’s remarkable.
In a December 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Robert De Niro shared his plan for actress Gia to become fluent in both English and Chinese.
He mentioned that his child is of mixed Chinese heritage, expressing a desire to instruct her in the Chinese language while also introducing English and Chinese nursery rhymes to her. His goal is to help her become proficient in both languages.
