Robert De Niro’s 1994 sci-fi horror film, often overlooked, is now streaming on HBO Max. It became available on March 1st, just in time for fans who enjoy monster movies.
Robert De Niro appeared in the film, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as Victor Frankenstein. The movie also featured a talented cast including Tom Hulce (known for Amadeus), Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter, Les Misérables), Ian Holm, John Cleese, Richard Briers, and Aidan Quinn. Based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, the story centers on a brilliant medical student who creates a living being from various body parts and quickly learns about the troubling repercussions of his actions.
De Niro’s Frankenstein Film Divided Critics & Audiences
I was really blown away by how beautiful Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein looked on screen – they clearly put the $45 million budget to good use! But honestly, the movie itself seemed to really divide people. Some people thought it was brilliant, others thought it completely missed the mark. Even now, decades later, opinions are still all over the place – you’ll find just as many positive as negative reviews if you look it up!
The new Frankenstein movie has received mixed reviews. Critics give it a 42% rating, saying it’s a bold attempt but doesn’t quite succeed as a horror film. Viewers are also divided, with only 49% of over 50,000 Rotten Tomatoes users reporting a positive experience.
Even though it received mixed reactions, Robert De Niro’s version of Frankenstein is still worth seeing. When it came out, it was praised for being a very accurate adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. The film also features stunning visuals reminiscent of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula – Coppola was also a producer on Frankenstein.
Frankenstein’s HBO Max Arrival Comes at the Perfect Time
Now that Robert De Niro’s Frankenstein is available on HBO Max, fans can easily enjoy another classic monster movie from the 1990s. Its release in March is well-timed, coinciding with the current excitement surrounding Hollywood’s latest creature feature releases.
Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming 2025 film, Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi as the Creature, is already generating a lot of buzz. It’s a strong contender for major awards, including Best Picture, and the Academy Awards ceremony on March 15th will coincide with the film’s release on HBO Max, making the timing perfect.
Okay, so before the Oscars happen, I’m really excited to check out another take on the Frankenstein story! It’s called The Bride!, and it’s a Gothic romance directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal – she’s amazing. It’s hitting theaters on March 6th, and it’s loosely based on Mary Shelley’s original novel. Apparently, it’s set in 1930s Chicago and stars Jessie Buckley as the Bride, which sounds super interesting!
