Robert Beltran hopes there'll be more of a chance to explore the Janeway/Chakotay relationship

As a long-time Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I’m thrilled to see Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgaw) and Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) reunited onscreen in the new animated series, Prodigy. Their chemistry was undeniable in Voyager, but their relationship never evolved into a romantic one. And while many fans have hoped for that, I believe there’s still potential for something beautiful to come from their partnership.

In an intriguing turn of events, Star Trek: Prodigy brought together Admiral Kathryn Janeway, portrayed by Kate Mulgrew, and Captain Chakotay, played by Robert Beltran. Although their dynamic didn’t develop into a romantic connection as some fans anticipated, it left room for potential storylines if the series is renewed for additional seasons.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed the intriguing dynamic between Beltran and [character’s name], and I can’t help but feel that their connection has great potential. It’s like we’re being set up for something truly magnificent in the upcoming seasons – something that could leave us all in awe for years to come.

It’s been a long time since we last saw the Prodigy team members interact onscreen, and they were previously just colleagues and close friends. Their romantic connection hadn’t been developed for audiences to witness. However, given their strong bond, there’s potential for exploring the evolution of their relationship if the show continues. Beltran even suggests that Janeway and Chakotay’s friendship deepened by the end of season two.

I fully expected for Prodigy to go three, four, five years, because I knew it was that good. And so, the way it ended, JC, our relationship ended in season 2, I thought was a beautiful lead up to something that could have been even more beautiful in the coming seasons. Three, four, five, six, or seven.

But I think that what was beautifully established was a respect and a love that could be platonic love, or it could be romantic love. But even at this point between the two series, they haven’t really had a chance to explore a personal relationship in a way where you can really give it time. The writers can take two or three or four episodes and explore maybe a marriage at the end of it, at the end of season seven of Prodigy.

Explore the relationship [and] the intimacy, which doesn’t have to be sexual, but just the attraction that they had for each other, at the very least an intellectual attraction. But of course, it was much more than that.

At the end of season 2, the relationship grew stronger, and something beautiful can happen in [seasons] three, four, five, and on, but I don’t know if that’ll ever be given a chance because of the nature of the business. But I hope so. I hope they will revive [Prodigy] for a few more seasons.

Beltran isn’t alone in his desire for more “Prodigy” seasons. Although the ending of season two could potentially serve as a final episode, there are many storylines left unresolved, such as the development of the relationship between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay. Even if the show takes its time exploring this connection, the eventual resolution, like the marriage Beltran suggested, would make for a satisfying conclusion to the series.

As a longtime fan of Star Trek: Voyager, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Prodigy on Netflix. When it finally premiered on July 1st, I was thrilled to see that it had garnered strong viewing numbers. But, being a realist, I understand that this alone may not be enough for Netflix to renew the series for another season.
