Robbie Williams responds to Better Man song being disqualified by Oscars
Robbie Williams has spoken up about the announcement that a track from his biographical movie, “Better Man,” was ruled ineligible for consideration at the 97th Academy Awards.
This movie, helmed by Michael Gracey, recounts the musical odyssey of the artist, starting from his childhood in Stoke-on-Trent, progressing through his time in boyband Take That and culminating in his solo stardom. The pop star is portrayed as a computer-generated chimpanzee throughout this film.
After premiering in movie theaters in December, the film earned a nomination for Best Original Song for “Forbidden Road” at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. Additionally, this song was initially nominated for the same category at the Oscars held in March.
A few days following this decision, it was overturned due to the song containing elements from another melody. As a result, it was deemed ineligible for competition, with the aim of upholding and safeguarding both the regulations and the category, as reported by Variety.
As I strolled down the crimson carpet at the Golden Globes, I shared with Deadline about the disqualification: “Hey there, guidelines are guidelines, and they need to be followed. Frankly, it’s one less social gathering I’ve got to attend. As an introvert, I always appreciate a quiet night in.
I’ve made it through, now safely on the other side and everything is fine. I’m at the Golden Globes and they are showering me with lots of affection,” he went on to say, playfully thanking the interviewer for being “frustrated on my behalf.
As a gamer, I’ve shared before how I ended up as a digital chimp in the game. When I first heard about it from Gracey, I was intrigued and decided to go along with it. After all, Jonno Davies, the talented actor who brings me to life through CGI, does an outstanding job that leaves me amazed every time I see him in action, as I reminisced on my appearance on The One Show.
What was the reason behind that? To be honest, it originated from Gracey’s mind. I have a fondness for the unconventional and the bizarre, and this concept resonated with me immediately upon hearing it. I wonder if the film would have garnered as much attention without the monkey character… Once you see it, everything falls into place.
Better Man is in cinemas now.
