Robbie Williams’ film Better Man sparks huge debate after Americans mock pop star over monkey biopic and claim they ‘have no idea who he is’
As a long-time fan of Robbie Williams and a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for unusual storytelling techniques, I must say that the film “Better Man” has left me quite impressed. The decision to portray Robbie as a CGI chimpanzee might seem bizarre at first, but it’s a stroke of genius in my opinion.
A discussion sparked on social media about Robbie Williams’ new musical biopic, which has led some Americans to criticize it. However, the Brits have found themselves explaining and defending him, stating that many Americans appear unfamiliar with his identity.
The critically acclaimed film “Better Man,” starring a 50-year-old actor, has been lauded by reviewers who describe it as captivating, powerful, and incredibly inspiring.
This semi-autobiographical film chronicles the soaring career ascension of the band member in Take That, including their remarkable rise to stardom, alongside the tumultuous events that unfolded as he grappled with his inner struggles and the trials of fame.
However, this movie takes an unexpected turn in its genre: instead of depicting the pop star as a human, it represents him as a chimpanzee. The movements are captured by Jonno Davies, while Robbie lends his voice to the character for the most part.
Yet, with snippets of the movie spreading across social platforms, many puzzled Americans acknowledge they were unaware of his existence, while the British find this hard to fathom.
In conversation with X, some Americans joked: “What on earth is going on with this ‘Robbie Williams’ monkey CGI film? It seems nobody in the U.S. knows who that is… And I bet many people got excited, thinking it was Robin Williams, only to be confused when they realized it wasn’t a big deal like they were led to believe.
‘Who is Robbie Williams and why does he have a biopic where he is a cartoon monkey?’
“Who exactly is Robbie Williams? And why do some individuals seem upset because Americans don’t appear to be keen on the films he’s involved with?
‘I had to look up who Robbie Williams is. Apparently he is some British guy who sings.’
In the trailer, Robbie claims to be among the most renowned pop stars globally. Frankly, I’ve never come across his name. To be honest, I have no interest in watching a biography about him either.
However, swiftly clarifying their stance, British enthusiasts fiercely justified the pop icon, stating emphatically: “It’s unbelievable! I can’t fathom how you’re not familiar with him, or dismissive of that fact.
I was astounded to learn that many Americans are unfamiliar with Robbie Williams, a fact that has left me utterly bewildered.
Over the course of three evenings, approximately 375,000 people flocked to Knebworth to witness Robbie Williams perform. His career has exploded across Europe, Asia, and South America, with his tours amassing over $600 million in earnings. However, he’s often ridiculed and his popularity questioned by Americans because he didn’t achieve the same level of success in North America. It’s time to appreciate him for who he is and what he’s accomplished.
American audience might wonder, “Who is Robbie Williams?” However, Robbie Williams is a highly successful British solo artist who holds the title of the biggest-selling solo artist in the UK. He has received more Brit Awards than any other artist, and every one of his albums has reached number 1. He also boasts numerous Guinness World Records and is among the most prominent selling music artists globally.
‘Americans slandering Robbie Williams for Rock DJ as if it is not one of the best songs ever made.’
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but wonder aloud why the Robbie Williams film has sparked such intense dislike among many Americans. If it doesn’t resonate with you, simply give it a pass. Laughs and all!
‘Need the hating ass americans to keep robbie williams’ name out of their mouths tbh if you dont get it then thats on you the man is a superstar.’
And over on TikTok, another Brit posted a TikTok sticking up for the star, which has racked up a whopping two million views in just days.
Under the username @sophiegotsleeved, a user commented: “People in America are being unfair to Robbie Williams. They don’t seem to realize that he signed the most significant recording contract in British music (worth £80m), which makes him one of the highest-earning singers globally.
Do you recall when Taylor Swift set a new record for the highest number of concert tickets sold in a single day during late 2022 for her Eras Tour? Can you guess who previously held that record for seventeen years?
Not only did he perform for three consecutive nights at Knebworth, but each evening drew an astounding audience of 300,000 people. Show him the recognition he deserves.
But, the debate continued as Brits and Americans flooded the comments section: ‘Literally never heard of the guy until the extreme amount of videos about him this week.’
‘Ok great but why is he a monkey.’
I can’t help but marvel at this mind-boggling fact: It seems like absolutely everyone in America is unaware of him! But hold up, wasn’t he a member of the globally acclaimed band, Take That? How on earth could that be possible when they conquered every corner of the globe?
Currently, I find myself questioning whether people in America are familiar with The Beatles or Queen. After all, Robbie Williams enjoyed tremendous popularity in Italy during the ’90s and early 2000s.
It’s hard to believe when some Americans aren’t familiar with him, it’s almost unthinkable! I mean, how could you not know Take That? They were incredibly popular here.
‘I’m happy he had a great career, he’s just practically unknown in the US.’
It’s surprising, given my affinity for both classic and contemporary tunes, that I’ve never encountered Robbie Williams before, not even my parents are familiar with him. Regardless, I’m willing to watch the movie and see what it has to offer.
Despite initial criticism labeling the Monkey Decision as a ‘major risk’ or even a ‘foolish move,’ it was later hailed as a ‘genius choice’ and ‘one of the most inspired pieces of casting for the year.’
They not only lauded director Michael Gracey for skillfully blending entertaining, choreographed musical sequences with heartfelt emotional moments but also emphasized that the movie shines most when it explores Robbie’s vulnerability.
In his four star review for Roger Egbert.com, Clint Worthington said the chimp gimmick was a ‘smart move’ that allowed Robbie to ‘vulnerably share his lows while underplaying the pomp and circumstance of his highs.’
He added: ‘You won’t see another music biopic quite like “Better Man,” regardless of your level of familiarity with its subject. There’s a surfeit of charm here that helps sell the nonsensical gimmick’.
In a similar vein, Robbie Collin from The Telegraph concurred, awarding the film four stars and stating: “Although it might appear foolish for Take That’s singer to recount his life using a CGI chimpanzee, it’s surprisingly brilliant”.
He said it was ‘pure monkey magic’ and praised Jonno for giving ‘the best performance of this type since Andy Serkis’s Gollum in The Lord of the Rings’, writing: ‘The physical integration is seamless; the emotional fine details rivetingly subtle and present.’
Additionally, in a four-star review from Empire, Alex Godfrey stated that the risk taken successfully enhanced every visual element, resulting in a heightened yet more personal experience.
Alex mentioned that the concept of using a monkey significantly enhances our empathy towards Robbie’s tale, stating: ‘This approach is incredibly effective: the slight animalistic gestures make him appear more like an actual animal, which causes us to care for him much deeper than we would if he resembled a human counterpart.’
