As a huge movie fan, I was absolutely floored by the news last week about Rob Reiner and his wife. It’s just devastating to hear they were apparently victims of a homicide. And it got even more shocking when I found out their son, Nick, was arrested as the main suspect. Apparently, they had a disagreement right before it happened. What’s really hitting home now is an interview Rob did a few months ago, where he spoke so positively about Nick working through some challenges. It’s just heartbreaking to see that interview circulating now, knowing what’s happened.
More information is emerging about what happened after the Reiners passed away, including reports that Nick left a hotel room covered in blood before he was arrested. Interestingly, Nick’s struggles with mental health and addiction were actually the focus of the 2015 movie Being Charlie, which he starred in and his father, Rob, directed. In a recent interview with NPR from September, the famous actor from Harry Met Sally discussed how his own experience supporting his son differed from the father he played in that film. He explained:
Actually, I tended to be the one taking charge and trying to help in any way I could. I definitely made some errors, and I’ve discussed them with him since then.
In the film Being Charlie, the father, played by Cary Elwes – known for The Princess Bride – initially seemed frustrated with the challenges of caring for his son who was battling addiction and homelessness. However, director Rob Reiner clarified that the father’s feelings stemmed from his son’s difficult situation, not personal ambition.
Following Rob Reiner’s passing, many friends and colleagues have been sharing their memories and praise. People are also revisiting the film Being Charlie, which was inspired in part by his real-life relationship with his son. In a recent NPR interview, Reiner also shared positive news about how his son is doing, stating:
He’s been great … hasn’t been doing drugs for over six years. He’s in a really good place.
This message offered a sense of hope, particularly when compared to the portrayal in the film Being Charlie. Though details surrounding the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner are still emerging, these statements present a far different picture of the family’s relationships than the tragic crime that has been heavily reported.
People are still deeply saddened by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, and many, like Meg Ryan, have expressed their condolences. While the legal process unfolds, fans are remembering Reiner’s significant contributions to television and film, including the movie Being Charlie.
Being Charlie is currently available to stream for free over on Tubi.
