Rob McElhenney Surprises Fans with Plans to Legally Change Name to ‘Rob Mac’

As a cinema enthusiast, one thing that sets certain celebrities apart is their distinctive names, and Rob McElhenney definitely falls into that category. His surname echoes his Irish roots and strengthens his personal brand, which makes it all the more intriguing to learn he’s considering a legal name change. Frankly, I had thought his musings about changing his name were either playful banter or simply an idea he was mulling over, not a serious intention.

This week in Los Angeles, Robert McElhenney III submitted the required documents for a name change. According to TMZ, the well-known celebrity intends to be known as “Rob Mac” in official records. This move seems substantial, as he appears to be aiming to adopt this name officially, rather than just using it professionally. The paperwork is said to have been signed on Thursday, indicating that the process has begun. At present, McElhenney has not yet issued an official statement about the change.

It’s true that some celebrities have altered their names, and many of these instances involve creating stage names. For example, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson both adopted their professional monikers. Interestingly, Brie Larson derived her name from an American Girl doll. In recent years, one of the most notable name changes belongs to Kanye West, who switched his name to Ye in 2021 after first considering it in 2018. Kanye’s decision was influenced by religious symbolism, but “Rob Mac” has a different objective for the change.

It appears that Rob McElhenney’s decision to change his surname could be linked to his business ventures, as suggested by a joint interview with Variety earlier this year. In this interview, McElhenney discussed More Better Industries, his multimedia company, which has international dealings. He mentioned that he was considering changing his name due to these corporate matters, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. Recently, McElhenney has shared one particular reason for making this change.

To make it easier for people from different parts of the world who speak various languages, and may find my name difficult to pronounce, I’ll simply be known as Rob Mac from now on.

The name ‘McElhenney’ might not be easily pronounced by some people outside the U.S., but Rob appears to take great pride in it. He even contemplated if such a choice would show disrespect towards his ancestry. However, his worries were alleviated when the co-creator of Mythic Quest discovered that relatives were considering changing their names and that others had done so before. Therefore, it seems the actor is sincere, but with his sense of humor, can you really blame me for doubting it was a joke?

More on Rob McElhenney

I recently learned the increased value of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ ownership of Wrexham Football Club since they took over – and it’s quite impressive!

Rob McElhenney’s career has significantly expanded over the past few years, particularly in the sports industry. He is now a co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C., a Welsh football club, along with friend Ryan Reynolds. Their journey to guide the team towards success is documented in the Emmy-winning series Welcome to Wrexham, available for streaming with a Hulu subscription. Apart from his involvement in football, McElhenney also continues to act alongside his wife on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is set to return for its 17th season soon, according to the 2025 TV schedule.

Regardless of the name he chooses, Rob McElhenney has every right to do what feels best for him in terms of self-identification. Admittedly, “Rob Mac” might take some time getting accustomed to. However, it could potentially work to his advantage significantly. (To be honest, I think there’s an opportunity for a playful partnership with McDonald’s on the horizon.)

In Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” which premieres on July 9 on FXX, you’ll recognize the man who will soon be known as Rob Mac.
