A dispute is brewing between the director of the Road House remake, Doug Liman, and Amazon MGM regarding the future of the series. It seems two different sequels to the action film could now be competing with each other.
The recent remake of Road House, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, quickly became popular. However, there’s been increasing concern about Amazon MGM releasing it directly to streaming, despite initially promising the director a traditional cinema release.
Following a disagreement, he chose to secure the rights to make his own sequel directly from the original writer, R. Lance Hill, even though the studio is already working on a follow-up film. His movie, titled Road House: Dylan, won’t include Jake Gyllenhaal or relate to the recent remake. Instead, it will continue the story from R. Lance Hill’s original version, picking up where that film ended.
Ilya Naishuller will direct the upcoming Amazon MGM film, Road House 2, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Dave Bautista, Aldis Hodge, and Leila George are also returning for the sequel. Like the original, Road House 2 will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and won’t be shown in movie theaters.
Details about the storylines for the upcoming sequels are still secret, but a legal dispute between the creators is public. David Hill, who wrote the original Road House in 1989, claims he now owns the script again thanks to a rule in U.S. copyright law. This law lets writers reclaim rights to their work 35 years after they initially sold them.
Amazon MGM strongly disagreed with statements made by writer Corey Hill and had a major dispute with him. The studio claimed the script was sold through his production company, Lady Amos Inc., making it “work for hire,” and therefore not his to reclaim. This disagreement resulted in Hill filing a copyright lawsuit against them over the Road House remake.
As of today, the lawsuit between Hill and Amazon MGM is still in progress and hasn’t been settled.
