“Riveting” ITV crime thriller reveals first-look images ahead of 2026 return

ITV has released a sneak peek at the second season of its popular crime drama, After the Flood. Sophie Rundle and Philip Glenister will be back as the main characters, and the new season is expected to be a success when it airs next year.

So, I’ve been checking out this new series – it’s created by Mick Ford, and Kelly Rundle plays this police officer, Jo Marshall. Basically, she’s investigating a death – they found a body after a big flood, and nobody knows who he is. It’s a pretty intriguing setup, honestly.

The crime thriller, featuring stars like Lorraine Ashbourne and Faye McKeever, was picked up for another season by ITV in November 2024, and the first images from the new season have just been released.

The second season begins with Jo now a detective, investigating a strange new murder. As tensions rise in Waterside because of environmental concerns, a second body is found in very unusual conditions.

The logline reveals that Jo’s pursuit of the killer puts her at odds with some of the town’s most powerful people, and the case quickly becomes very personal for her.

She’s about to begin a secret investigation to uncover the decades-long corruption within the town’s police force, which may also involve her own family.

Alongside the previously mentioned actors, Nicholas Gleaves, Matt Stokoe, George Bukhari, Tripti Tripuraneni, Leo Flanagan, and Jacqueline Boatswain will also be returning for another season.

The show also features many new actors, including Alun Armstrong, Jill Halfpenny, Matthew McNulty, Ian Puleston-Davies, Anil Desai, Steph De Whalley, Nathalie Armin, Tony Marshall, and Roger Morlidge.

The show’s second season, described as a gripping drama, will have six episodes, each lasting an hour. Azhur Saleem will direct the first three, and Tom McKay, who previously worked on Ten Pound Poms, will direct the final three.

The first season of After the Flood, which premiered in January 2024, was well-received by critics. The Guardian described it as a surprisingly captivating disaster story that cleverly evolves into a compelling murder mystery.

After the Flood season 2 will air on ITV1 and ITVX in 2026.
