Based on a popular online novel, the Chinese fantasy drama The Untamed tells the exciting story of two young warriors who are very different from each other. The series follows their journey as they become caught up in a dangerous conflict between powerful families, which initially separates them. Years later, they come together again to investigate a string of mysterious deaths.
As a huge fan of fantasy and mythology, I have to say The Untamed is just a gorgeous xianxia story – that’s a genre rooted in Chinese legends. What really grabbed me was how well the story was told, the incredible music, and how fully realized all the characters felt. Plus, the actors had amazing chemistry! Since it came out, everyone’s been raving about how perfectly it mixes romance, fantasy, and mystery, all wrapped up in this beautiful, action-packed world. Honestly, once you start watching, it’s hard to stop – it’s totally addictive!
‘Luoyang’ (2021)
The 39-episode series Luoyang follows three people from different walks of life who team up to solve a puzzling mystery in the city of Luoyang. Their investigation leads them to a surprising conspiracy with the potential to cause widespread chaos.
If you’re looking for a Chinese drama that’s a bit different, Luoyang is a great choice. It stands out from typical romance or historical dramas by focusing on a compelling crime mystery that will keep you hooked. The show moves quickly, balancing suspense, action, and lovable characters. Plus, like many Chinese dramas, it’s beautifully made with stunning visuals and impressive detail.
‘Story of Yanxi Palace’ (2018)

Story of Yanxi Palace follows Wu Jinyan, a clever young woman who enters the palace determined to uncover the truth about her sister’s death. She uses her intelligence and resourcefulness to navigate the dangers and overcome the obstacles she faces along the way.

The 70+ episode series takes its time to develop each character, and keeps viewers engaged with unexpected plot twists and a central theme of revenge.
‘You Are My Glory’ (2021)

Based on Gu Man’s novel, You Are My Glory tells the love story of a famous actress and a brilliant aerospace engineer. Childhood friends, Quiao Jingjing and Yu Tu reconnect, and their relationship gradually develops into something more profound.
This Chinese drama is captivating from beginning to end, with a story that feels both real and deeply moving. It avoids common clichés, offering clever conversations and surprisingly passionate moments. The connection between Dilraba Dilmurat and Yang Yang is incredible – they perfectly portray the characters created by Gu Man, making their scenes truly unforgettable.
‘Eternal Love of Dream’ (2020)

Based on the novel Three Lives Three Worlds, The Pillow Book, Eternal Love of Dream is both a continuation and a spin-off of the hit 2017 series Eternal Love. The show features Dilmurat and Gao Weiguang as the main characters and tells the love story between the Crown Prince of the Heavenly Realm and the Nine-tailed Fox Queen of Quiqiu.
Eternal Love of Dream is a visually stunning and heartbreaking fantasy romance inspired by Chinese mythology. It’s sure to please fans of the genre, with many praising its beautiful visuals, detailed costumes, and the strong connection between the main actors. But what truly makes this drama special is its relatable story about life and love, which encourages viewers to think deeply while enjoying the fantastical elements.
‘Ming Dynasty’ (2019)

The historical drama Ming Dynasty tells a story of ambition, political schemes, and love. It centers on Sun Ruowei, who enters the palace as a low-ranking concubine but climbs the ranks to become Empress. Throughout her journey in the dangerous royal court, Ruowei encounters conspiracies, betrayals, and fierce competition for power.
If you enjoy historical dramas filled with romance, political maneuvering, and palace secrets, the Ming Dynasty series is worth checking out. While it’s a fictional story set in China, it’s an engaging way to get a glimpse into the country’s culture. Some episodes might feel a little slow, but the show is visually stunning and features compelling characters, beautiful costumes, and strong acting.
‘Eternal Love’ (2017)

Eternal Love is a grand fantasy romance that follows the love story of Bai Qian, a powerful fox goddess played by Yang Mi, and Ye Hua, the crown prince of the Heavenly Realm, portrayed by Mark Chao. Their relationship unfolds across three lifetimes and different worlds, with the drama stemming from them repeatedly living lives as both ordinary humans with no memory of their divine abilities and as powerful gods.
With its rich world inspired by Chinese mythology – including gods, demons, and travel between realms – Eternal Love truly stands out as a fantasy TV series. Although it has over 50 episodes, the captivating story makes it easy to become fully immersed. The performances by Yang Mi and Mark Chao are exceptional; they skillfully portray different iterations of their characters with both nuance and emotional depth. The series remains incredibly popular and is one of the most-watched Chinese dramas of all time.
‘The Day of Becoming You’ (2021)

Okay, so I just finished watching this really fun show! It’s about Jiang Yi, this super popular but really closed-off member of a boy band, and Yu Shengsheng, a bubbly entertainment reporter. They absolutely hate each other at first, but then, on their shared birthday, they wake up… in each other’s bodies! It’s hilarious watching them try to figure things out and live each other’s lives, and it actually forces them to see the world from a totally different point of view. They have to work together, which is pretty chaotic, but also surprisingly sweet.
With heartfelt humor, The Day of Becoming You cleverly uses a body-swap premise to show us things from different points of view. But what truly makes the show delightful is the fantastic chemistry and convincing role reversal between Zhang Xincheng and Liang Jie. It also provides a fascinating glimpse into the Chinese entertainment world, highlighting different experiences within the industry.
‘Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace’ (2018)

Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace tells the story of Ulanara Ruyi, a noblewoman who enters the emperor’s palace hoping to share a loving marriage with her childhood friend, Emperor Qianlong. She eventually becomes empress, but quickly discovers the dangers of life in the imperial court. Surrounded by ruthless political games and envious rivals, Ruyi finds her once-strong connection with the emperor fading due to pressure, suspicion, and scheming.
Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace is different from many other Chinese dramas because it presents a heartbreaking and realistic story, focusing less on a perfect hero. It also honestly portrays the downsides of palace life and how it damages relationships – a perspective you don’t often see. If you’re looking for a visually stunning, emotionally powerful, and insightful drama, rather than something light and fluffy, this is the one to watch.
