As a fan of David Tennant – especially his work in Good Omens – I’m thrilled to see his Disney+ series, Rivals, is coming back next month. It’s been two years since we first saw the show, and now, just a month before the premiere of Season 2, we’ve gotten a first look with a brand new trailer. It definitely gives us a taste of what’s in store, and I, for one, am already excited!
Based on Jilly Cooper’s novel, Rivals is a period drama set in 1980s England. The series centers on the intense and long-standing conflict between Rupert Campbell-Black, a charismatic politician from a wealthy family, and Tony Baddingham, a fiercely competitive television executive. The first season showed their rivalry playing out at a local TV station, and the conflict continues in Season 2, as revealed in the new trailer. You can watch the trailer below.
The Feud Continues in Rivals Season 2
The competition for the Central South West television license is becoming incredibly intense, with a fierce rivalry developing between Corinium and Venturer. The story’s central character, Tony Baddingham, is now even more determined to defeat his opponents. He’s willing to use damaging rumors and manipulate people around him to stay in control.
Set against the backdrop of the extravagant 1980s, the lives of those connected to a local team fall apart. Marriages crumble due to professional pressures, secret relationships endanger families, and old secrets come to light with dramatic results. As competition intensifies, friendships and love are strained, and everyone is pushed to their limits – but at what price?
The cast of Rivals includes Aidan Turner (known from Being Human) as Declan O’Hara, Victoria Smurfit (Trial & Retribution) as Maud O’Hara, Nafessa Williams as Cameron Cook, Bella Maclean (Sex Education) as Taggie O’Hara, Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) as Lizzie Vereker, and Danny Dyer (The Football Factory) as Freddie Jones, alongside Hassell and Tennant.
Season 2 Will Last Longer Than Season 1
Critics loved the first season of Rivals, giving it a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers also enjoyed it, with a score of 90%. The show was a big hit on Hulu and Disney+, leading to a second season with more episodes—12 in total, compared to the eight episodes in Season 1.
The producers of Rivals, Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Alexander Lamb, announced last year they’re thrilled to be filming Season 2 in Rutshire for twelve episodes. They also expressed their excitement about bringing back the same cast and crew, and sharing more of Jilly’s story with viewers.
Rivals is in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. Season 2 will debut on May 15, 2026.
