Riot Games, creators of League of Legends, have recently given their community an update concerning the Hextech Chests. In a freshly-posted video, Andrei “Meddler” van Roon and Paul “Pabro” Bellezza shed light on why these chests will no longer be free and how this ties into the commercial aspect of League of Legends. Riot Games on Hextech Chests
During the Season 1 update in League of Legends, Meddler admitted that Riot Games introduced free Hextech Chests as a means to reward players for their playtime. Over the course of time, these chests became the primary method for players to acquire skins. Although this enhanced the player experience, it diminished the appeal of purchasing skins directly, as stated by Meddler. Additionally, the over-reliance on Hextech Chests proved to be problematic for League of Legends’ sustainability.
Meddler explained that free chests inadvertently became the main method for unlocking skins, resulting in many players amassing significant collections without spending money. Consequently, buying skins directly lost appeal for numerous players since they were content to wait and receive them eventually. While this created a positive player experience, it wasn’t sustainable for League of Legends over the long term.
League of Legends Hextech Chests update
Pabro went on to discuss how they adjusted the game’s incentive structure to uphold its long-term sustainability objective. The creators aimed to strike a balance between offering free cosmetic rewards without reverting back to a time when none were obtainable through gameplay. He mentioned that discovering new cosmetics and boosting skin production was helpful, but the team ultimately found it necessary to decrease the number of free skins in order to preserve the game’s revenue model.
According to Pabro, expanding the number of skins we produce annually benefited both our business and player enjoyment, but eventually, we encountered significant, decreasing returns. To address this, Riot Games started offering premium cosmetics and investigating various types of cosmetics. However, it’s clear that champion skins are what you value the most when it comes to cosmetics, and adding pay-to-win content is out of the question for us.
Can you still get Hextech Chests for free?
Towards the conclusion of the Hextech Chests discussion, Meddler emphasized that alterations such as the one regarding Hextech Chests are aimed at preserving the longevity of League of Legends. He expressed a desire to keep League as an exceptional, entirely free-to-play game. He believes that making adjustments like this, although they may be met with resistance, are necessary and enable us to fulfill not only our current objectives for League, but also our vision for its future development.
