Riot Games bans Shitouren from competitive TFT: We made a mistake
During a temporary suspension, Shitouren has been prohibited from participating in all Tournament of Fantasy Teams (TFT) competitions due to accusations and proof of “deliberate poor performance.
Due to an investigation into win trading during the Into The Arcane Tactician’s Crown event, Riot Games has temporarily suspended the competitive Teamfight Tactics account of Cao “Shitouren” Liang for a specified period.
Shitouren banned for win trading
Michael “Riot Sherman” Sherman, the Esports Product Manager for Teamfight Tactics, clarified to the player community the reasons behind their initial decision and how Shitouren was ultimately punished for intentionally underperforming in the recently completed Into The Arcane Tactician’s Crown tournament.
In simpler terms, Sherman admitted they acted hastily and erred in their judgment. They want to acknowledge this error, particularly regarding the initial ruling on Shitouren’s case where they deemed his losses unintentional, cleared him of any suspicion, and did not impose penalties.
According to Sherman, Shitouren’s doubtful choices didn’t clearly show intentional poor performance initially. But he added that fresh evidence, videos, and info discovered later have contributed to the revised decision on the matter.
The video featured parts of Shitouren’s gameplay from Into The Arcane Tactician’s Crown, particularly an instance where he deliberately weakened his game board. This incident occurred in Stage 5-2 of game 13, when instead of purchasing the two-star Gangplank available in his shop, he chose not to. Upon being asked about this decision, Shitouren explained that he was gathering information (scouting) during that time. However, Riot Games noted that this scouting did not yield any beneficial changes to his game board. Essentially, he had the resources and opportunity to acquire Gangplank but opted not to, making a deliberate choice in the process.
According to Sherman, the new decision indicates that Shitouren intentionally played poorly, but there was no proof of him working together with any other player in a dishonest manner, also known as collusion or win-trading. In simpler terms, Shitouren is accused of throwing matches on purpose, not manipulating results to win. The penalty for this offense is that Shitouren will be banned from all Riot Games Teamfight Tactics competitions during Set 14, lasting until July 14, 2025. Furthermore, his winnings from the Tactician’s Crown event will be taken away.
The video additionally provided information about steps being taken to avoid hasty judgments like this one in the future. Sherman emphasizes their commitment to preserving fair competition moving forward. Their strategy will center around education, prevention, and enforcement.
