Riley Keough reveals late mother Lisa Marie Presley didn't know how to 'process' dad Elvis' death

As a devoted fan, I cannot help but be moved by Riley Keough’s heartfelt revelations about her mother Lisa Marie Presley‘s grieving process over her iconic father Elvis. The insight into their private world is nothing short of captivating. It’s as if we are peeking through a time machine, witnessing the raw emotions of a family deeply entwined in the glamour and tragedy of stardom.

As a die-hard admirer, I’m thrilled to delve into the intimate, seldom-disclosed journey of grief that my idol, Riley Keough, is unveiling about her beloved mother Lisa Marie Presley, who continues to grapple with the loss of her iconic father Elvis Presley – a sorrow that spans over four decades.

In a segment of the upcoming CBS special, An Oprah Special: The Presleys – Elvis, Lisa Marie, and Riley Keough, during their open conversation, they discussed Lisa Marie’s coping mechanisms following her father Elvis’ tragic demise in 1977 due to a heart attack.

In simpler terms, Keough conveyed that her mother’s grief was profoundly intense, and it seemed to her that her mother wasn’t quite sure how to deal with it. This sentiment was shared during an interview with Winfrey as Keough promotes her mom’s posthumous memoir.

The actress explained that what happened next was something very personal to her. Over time, her mother would seclude herself, put on his music, get drunk, and weep when no one was around.

As a devoted follower, I had the privilege of witnessing a profound and insightful dialogue between me and Oprah Winfrey, which marked my initial extensive interview following the sudden passing of my mother in January 2023, at the tender age of 54.

Winfrey, aged 70, inquired if Keough saw her mother frequently weeping over her father’s songs due to deep sorrow on multiple occasions.

She confirmed that, indeed, there were speakers in her room back then, and often she would sit on the floor, weeping, while listening to her father’s music. That was her response.

Oprah Winfrey and Diane Keough each made a visit to the renowned Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee, where they conducted a personal, face-to-face conversation.

In a separate video, Keough shared the origin behind her choice of title for her memoir, “From Here To The Great Unknown.

Keough shared with Winfrey that it was quite peculiar, as the song was one where she sang alongside her father.

At first, she wasn’t keen on it. However, she was eventually persuaded to perform the song. I find it quite enchanting, a harmonious duet between the two of them. Furthermore, while attempting to understand the plot of the book, that’s where my focus lay.

From that point, she remembered the effect the loss of her two family members had on her, along with the questions about life’s mysteries that usually surface when someone dear to us leaves us behind.

She disclosed, as per Clarion’s report, that since losing two family members, much of her time and emotions have been spent pondering their whereabouts. However, she chooses to view this as them embarking on a fresh journey: ‘The Great Unknown’.

Instead of writing her own memoir, Lisa Marie Presley accumulated numerous accounts about her extraordinary life, yet she did not complete it. In the end, her daughter took up the task and finished writing the memoir on her behalf.

Indeed, she was asked by her mother to assist with the demanding chore prior to her unexpected passing in January 2023.

In her autobiography, Lisa Marie details her deep affection for Elvis, her emotional hardships following his passing, her romantic encounters, parenthood, the tragic demise of her son Benjamin in 2020, and the arrival of her granddaughter, Tupelo, who is now two years old.

In a conversation with PEOPLE in September, Keough expressed that the intention behind her memoir, as well as his aim in completing it for her, was to delve deeper than the superficial tabloid image of her and instead uncover the essence of who she truly was.

She elaborated on how to bring her character to life as a fully developed person: encompassing the best of a mother, a spirited child, a loyal friend, an underestimated artist, honest, humorous, traumatized, joyful, mournful – reflecting every aspect of her extraordinary life.

‘I want to give voice to my mother in a way that eluded her while she was alive.’

You can catch the complete episode on Tuesday, October 8th, at 8 PM Pacific Time / Eastern Time on CBS, or stream it on Paramount+.
