Good news for Ridley Scott fans! His famous historical movie is now available to stream for free on both Tubi and Pluto.
Released in 2000, Gladiator features Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Nielsen in a story of betrayal and revenge. The film centers on Maximus Decimus Meridius, a general wronged by Commodus (Phoenix), the power-hungry son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). After Commodus murders his father and seizes power, Maximus is enslaved and becomes a gladiator, fighting his way to the top while seeking vengeance for his family and the emperor.
Ridley Scott’s epic historical film about ancient Rome was a critical and commercial success. Despite costing $103 million to make, it earned over $466 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2000. Reviewers particularly loved Russell Crowe’s performance, and the film ultimately won five Oscars, including Best Actor for Crowe.
I still remember how blown away I was when I first saw Gladiator, and it’s amazing to me that, even after 25 years, it’s still considered a fantastic film! Rotten Tomatoes shows an 80% approval rating from critics, based on over 250 reviews. But what really gets me is that audiences love it just as much – it has an 87% score from over 250,000 fans! They put it perfectly: Russell Crowe’s performance is incredible and really gives Ridley Scott’s vision of ancient Rome its emotional core.
Since it came out, Gladiator has been recognized as a highly impactful film of the 2000s. Its popularity led to a sequel, Gladiator II, which was released in 2024. Director and producer Ridley Scott returned for the new film, alongside returning cast members Derek Jacobi and Connie Nielsen. The story follows Paul Mescal as an exiled Roman prince who is captured and forced to fight as a gladiator for Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave aiming to take down the ruling emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).

Ridley Scott demonstrated he still has a knack for filmmaking with the 2024 release of Gladiator II, which earned $462.2 million globally. The film’s success has breathed new life into the franchise, and in September 2024, Scott announced he was beginning to develop a third film. He playfully hinted at Gladiator III, saying he’d started brainstorming ideas and was excited about the possibilities.
Ridley Scott explained that the conclusion of Gladiator II echoes the ending of The Godfather, where Michael Corleone reluctantly takes over the family business and asks, ‘Now, Father, what do I do?’ This sets the stage for the next film, which will focus on a protagonist who is unhappy with his current situation. Scott later shared in August 2025 that…
