Ridley Scott was depressed for months after first seeing Star Wars
As a seasoned gamer with an extensive library of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can wholeheartedly say that Ridley Scott’s journey as a filmmaker is one for the books. The man behind such masterpieces as “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” and “Gladiator” has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
Regarded as one of the top filmmakers ever, Ridley Scott’s talent is exceptional and unique, yet even great artists like him may sometimes question their work. During the premiere of Alien: Romulus, Scott was asked about his favorite films. Intriguingly, he shared that a specific movie made him endure several months of depression: Star Wars.
In conversation with Letterboxd, the director was asked to name four of his favorite films, beginning with a timeless classic. He responded, “Two groundbreaking movies are ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. It portrays a computer valuing the mission over the crew, which is echoed in ‘Alien’.”
He then revealed his second choice, saying, “Then, another seminal movie was Star Wars. I’d finished my first film, it was The Duellists. Very good film. I won a prize at Cannes. I was going to do Tristan & Isolde next. I mean how artistic can you go?”
Came here to see the opening night of Star Wars, and I sat there, I was depressed for three months. How could I be doing Tristan & Isolde when this guy does this?

Perhaps it was a fortunate twist of fate, you might say. This unexpected event led us to one of the best science fiction movies ever made – ‘Alien’. As Scott put it, “I took a U-turn and within six weeks, I was offered Alien. It was by chance. I agreed to do it.” Remarkably, ‘Alien’ would go on to become one of the most impactful film franchises in history. Its influence can even be seen in an episode of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, titled “Legacy of Terror” from Season 2.
In case you’re curious about Scott’s additional top picks in cinema, one of them was “Blade Runner,” a film he directed himself, and the other was “Quest for Fire.”
