Ridley Scott says it’s “bullshit” that Gladiator 2 cut a same-sex kiss
As a lifelong fan of epic films, I find myself utterly enthralled by the latest twist in the tale of Gladiator II. The rumors of a same-sex kiss being cut from the movie have been a subject of great intrigue for me. Denzel Washington’s recent revelation that he indeed shared a lip-lock with his on-screen partner has sent my curiosity soaring.
Director Ridley Scott, of Gladiator II fame, dismissed rumors suggesting a same-sex kiss scene was removed from the movie as “untrue” or “nonsense.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share some exciting news about Denzel Washington’s latest role. In the sequel to Scott’s 2000 blockbuster, he portrays Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer. Recently, Denzel revealed an intriguing detail: his character shares a kiss with another man in the film. However, he expressed hope that the scene was left on the cutting room floor.
In a recent interview with Gayety, he mentioned, “In the movie, I did indeed share a kiss with another man, but it seems that scene was removed, or as I suspect, edited out. It feels like they opted for a different take, perhaps choosing to avoid any possible awkwardness.
“I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet. I killed him about five minutes later. It’s Gladiator. It’s the kiss of death!”
During a conversation with Variety at the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles on November 18, Scott clarified that although the scene was enacted, it did not occur in real life.
“No, that’s bullshit,” he said. “They never did. They acted the moment – it didn’t happen.”
The publication also caught up with Washington at the premiere, who described the kiss as more of a “peck” on the lips.
“It really is much ado about nothing,” he said. “They’re making more of it than it was.
“I kissed him on the hands, I gave him a peck and I killed him.”
20 years following Maximus’ demise, Gladiator II brings back Lucius Verus, who has since grown into a man, portrayed by Paul Mescal.
Following the demolition of his home by the Roman Empire, Lucius takes up the role of a gladiator, simultaneously pursuing vengeance and managing his hidden regal identity – for he is truly the next in line to claim the throne.
Over the weekend, the movie opened as the top-grossing film worldwide, earning a total of $87 million in 63 different countries.
The data shows that these box office earnings from “Gladiator II” mark Paramount Pictures’ largest international debut for an R-rated film and also the largest international launch for any movie directed by Ridley Scott.
Gladiator II is out now in UK cinemas, and is released in US cinemas on November 22.
