Ridley Scott explains why he didn’t call Russell Crowe for Gladiator 2
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of immersive storytelling under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of intrigue and disappointment at Ridley Scott’s decision not to consult Russell Crowe for the sequel of “Gladiator II”.
Director Ridley Scott explains his decision to forego consulting Russell Crowe for the upcoming “Gladiator II,” revealing the reasons behind this choice.
Back in the year 2000, I stepped into the colossal arena as Maximus Decimus Meridius in the epic movie Gladiator. That performance netted me the prestigious Best Actor award at the 2001 Academy Awards.
Even though Maximus Decimus Meridius had bravely overpowered the tyrant Emperor Commodus during a grand battle in the Colosseum, he ultimately succumbed to wounds he received during the confrontation, leading to a heartbreaking end for him later on.
In a recent sit-down with Empire magazine, director Ridley Scott shared that the demise of Meridius was the main factor behind our lack of conversation for the sequel movie (hitting UK theaters on November 15). As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a bit sad about this missed opportunity to work with Russell Crowe again.
He remarks that the storyline of “Gladiator II” was actually quite obvious to us. He believes it was so nearby and apparent that we found it too straightforward, assuming it was too simplistic.
He believes Russell Crowe remains among the finest actors globally, and they seem to get along well, or so he hopes. However, if Crowe starts complaining about not being consulted, it’s unnecessary, as he, of course, is no longer alive!
The sequel, titled “Gladiator 2“, primarily focuses on the character of Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, who is introduced as the youngest offspring of the noblewoman Lucilla, a character previously portrayed by Connie Nielsen in the initial film.
In the years following “Gladiator,” the sequel unfolds with Lucius maturing and drifting apart from his mother, who had sent him as a young boy to the Numidian region in North Africa, thus keeping him distant from the Roman Empire.
The movie opens in Numidia, where Lucius is living a comfortable life along with his wife and child. But this tranquility is abruptly disrupted when the Romans advance further into North Africa, bringing invaders from his native land closer to him.
In the role of Pedro Pascal, known for his performance in “The Last of Us”, takes on the character of Roman general Acacius. His actions are directed by co-emperors Geta (portrayed by Joseph Quinn from “Stranger Things”) and Caracalla (depicted by Fred Hechinger from “The White Lotus”).
New actors joining the lineup are Denzel Washington, portraying a former slave transformed into a prosperous trader, and the return of Derek Jacobi in his role as Senator Gracchus.
Gladiator 2 is released in UK cinemas on November 17.
