I’m so excited that one of my all-time favorite movies, a really groundbreaking action film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Demi Moore, is now available on a new streaming service! It’s a movie that really pushed the limits back then, and I can’t wait for more people to discover it.
In the 1990s, director Ridley Scott, known for films like Thelma & Louise (1991), and popular actress Demi Moore joined forces for the 1997 action movie G.I. Jane. The film was groundbreaking for challenging traditional ideas about gender roles.
After almost 30 years, the film G.I. Jane will be available to stream on Peacock starting March 1st. Currently, it isn’t offered on any other streaming services, but you can rent or buy it on platforms like Prime Video for as little as $3.99.
Directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Twohy and Danielle Alexandra, G.I. Jane features Demi Moore as Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil. The film tells a fictional story about the first woman to go through the rigorous training required to become a U.S. Navy SEAL.
The film features a stellar cast including Demi Moore, nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Substance, and Viggo Mortensen, a three-time Oscar nominee known for films like Eastern Promises, Captain Fantastic, and Green Book. Academy Award winner Anne Bancroft (The Miracle Worker) also appears, alongside Jason Beghe, Scott Wilson, Lucinda Jenney, Morris Chestnut, Josh Hopkins, Jim Caviezel, Boyd Kestner, Kevin Gage, David Vadim, Daniel Von Bargen, David Warshofsky, John Michael Higgins, and Dimitri Diatchenko.
When G.I. Jane came out in 1997, it received a mixed reaction from critics and audiences alike. While many praised Demi Moore’s dedication to the role, reviewers felt the film’s strong message was lost in overly dramatic visuals and a forceful display of patriotism. The film received a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 53% audience score, showing that people were divided on whether they liked it.
Although reviews were mixed, G.I. Jane opened at number one in theaters and held the top spot for two weeks. It ultimately grossed $98.4 million globally on a $50 million production budget, and generated over $22 million in revenue from VHS and DVD rentals.
Despite receiving a lot of positive feedback for her acting, Demi Moore won a Razzie Award for Worst Actress, which many felt was unfair. The award wasn’t actually for her performance in G.I. Jane, but for her role in the poorly received film Striptease from the year before.
Demi Moore considers her role in G.I. Jane the highlight of her career, as she shared in her autobiography, Inside Out. Director Ridley Scott has even called it “the best pro-women film ever made,” surpassing even Thelma & Louise.
In retrospect, G.I. Jane is proving to be a more important film than many people recognized when it came out in 1997. Beyond the intense training scenes, it’s a story about inner strength, maintaining your self-respect, and overcoming limitations imposed by others. This powerful message is what keeps the film relevant today—it’s not just an exciting military action movie, but a groundbreaking film that promoted empowerment before it became a common theme in Hollywood.
