Rick Hurst, Cletus Hogg on ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ and father of actor Ryan Hurst, dies at 79
Sadly, Rick Hurst, famously recognized for his role as simple-minded Deputy Cletus Hogg in “The Dukes of Hazzard” television series, passed away suddenly in Los Angeles. He was 79 years old.
I can’t help but feel it’s unfair that Rick Hurst left us this afternoon. When something as shocking as this occurs, it becomes significantly harder to comprehend. As the one who played Cooter Davenport on “Hazzard,” Ben Jones shared this sentiment Thursday evening on the Facebook page of Cooter’s Place, a business inspired by the show.

Actress Lynn Hamilton, renowned for her unforgettable performances as Nurse Donna in ‘Sanford and Son’ and Verdie on ‘The Waltons,’ passed away at the age of 95.
Just learned about the sad passing of Rick Hurst, affectionately known as Cletus Hogg to many. As a fellow film enthusiast who shared the screen with him on “Dukes of Hazzard” as Bo Duke, I can’t help but express my deepest admiration for this extraordinary individual. His unique blend of humanity, reason, and humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Heaven will now undoubtedly be a more tranquil and orderly place with his presence there. Until we meet again, my friend, I’ll keep the spirit alive and laughter echoing in tribute to you! Love always.
Initially, Hurst was planned to attend fan meet-and-greets from July 3rd to July 7th at Cooter’s, located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. However, as stated on their official website (which also functions as a restaurant), the visit has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. This announcement was made on their Facebook page on Thursday morning.
1946 saw the birth of Hurst in Houston, where he also spent his childhood years. Acting piqued his interest at a young age, as early as when he was 5 or 6. In his own words on a podcast with Scott Romine, a noted pop culture aficionado during the COVID era, Hurst recalled an instance at a Houston Public Library branch with his mother. A man allegedly tapped him on the shoulder and proposed a role in a commercial for the library system. He accepted the offer, and his compensation was a refreshing chocolate soda.
Following his education at high school in Houston, Hurst pursued theater studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, later earning a master’s degree in fine arts from Temple University in Philadelphia. Prior to relocating to Los Angeles, all of his experience was gained on stage. His initial TV credit was for “Sanford and Son” in 1972, with his most recent credit being for the 2016 TV short “B My Guest.

On the podcast, Hurst expressed his frequent gratitude towards God for the prosperity of “The Dukes of Hazzard” and its dedicated fanbase.
He declared that the daredevils were the main attractions of the program, and everyone in the production understood that the initial leading role belonged to the General Lee – a 1969 orange Dodge Charger, adorned with a Confederate flag, which was driven by characters Bo and Luke Duke, with Tom Wopat portraying Luke.
