Rick Buckler, former drummer for British rock trio the Jam, dies at 69

I’m deeply saddened to share that I, a devoted fan, am announcing the passing of Rick Buckler, an exceptional English drummer who was instrumental in catapulting the iconic rock band, The Jam, into stardom during the late ’70s.

On Tuesday, Midnight Mango’s talent management, Buckler’s, announced on social media that the musician passed away Monday evening in his birthplace, Woking, Surrey, which is located in southeast England. His passing followed a brief illness and he was surrounded by his loved ones. He was 69 years old.

The agency stated that Rick was a cherished spouse, parent, and grandparent, as well as a loyal friend to numerous individuals. His absence will be deeply felt. At this moment, his family prefers solitude and understanding.

A few weeks following the announcement that he would step away from spoken-word duties due to persistent health problems, the drummer unfortunately passed away. As per a statement issued in January, Buckler was instructed to rest, repair, and rebuild his physical strength to manage touring across the UK. At that time, more specifics about Buckler’s condition were not disclosed.

Known to music enthusiasts primarily due to his stint with The Jam, Buckler was equally passionate about writing, furniture design, and restoration. This rock trio emerged in 1972, consisting of Buckler, lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Weller, and bassist Bruce Foxton. The band garnered acclaim for songs such as “Town Called Malice” and “That’s Entertainment,” and for their debut album, “In the City.” This album was praised by The Times in 1993 as a “thrilling embodiment of British teen rebellion.

The musician took over as the guitarist from Bob Stinson within the groundbreaking rock group, contributing his skills on their last pair of studio records.

Prior to disbanding in 1982, The Jam released a total of six albums, with “The Gift” being their last one. They frequently dominated the U.K. charts. Additionally, they were featured in the 2015 TV documentary titled “The Jam: About the Young Idea.

For over 40 years after their breakup, singer Weller stated on Tuesday that the band’s influence continues to live on.

We surpassed even our wildest expectations, and what we’ve created remains unwavering through the trials of time,” Weller shared on Tuesday along with a picture of Buckler. “Sending my heartfelt condolences to everyone connected.

In a series of posts through Weller’s X account, they reminisced about their past with Buckler. These posts included old black-and-white photos from The Jam’s most active period. Upon hearing the news of Buckler’s demise, Weller was left in a state of disbelief and sorrow. He recalled rehearsals at his bedroom, all the pubs and clubs they played as youngsters, and eventually producing records together.

“What a journey!” Weller wrote.

Foxton, deeply saddened by Buckler’s passing, expressed that his former bandmate was a kind-hearted individual and an exceptional drummer. His inventive drum patterns significantly contributed to the shaping of our music.

On timeless roots-rock hits like ‘The Weight’ and ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’, Hudson’s keyboard played a crucial role in shaping the Band’s distinctive sound.

The bassist added: “I’m glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did.”

Following his time with The Jam, Buckler maintained interactions with fans through question-and-answer sessions and other public engagements, as stated by his agency. Additionally, he utilized his experiences with The Jam to collaborate on the book “The Jam 1982” alongside Zoe Howe. During promotional activities for this book in 2022, Buckler admitted to rock podcast Strange Brew that none of them were particularly exceptional musicians in many aspects.

He expressed that our aim was to be as creative as we could manage, in order to complement each other effectively within the band. In essence, he stated that collaboration is crucial for a band, it’s not about individual skills, but rather about combining them harmoniously, which ultimately results in the unique sound that makes everything work.

He stated, “By using various ingredients, you can create the same type of cake, but it’s not identical. The same applies to a band; although you might experiment with different elements, it’s those unique qualities that make a band truly exceptional.

Before parting ways with live events, Buckler’s agency stated that he was “extremely enthusiastic about revamping his ‘in conversation’ show and performing it in numerous new locations,” which would cater not only to fresh audiences but also to loyal fans who have supported him for years.

“Rick looks forward to seeing you all down the road,” Midnight Mango said in January.
