Richard Osman teases Thursday Murder Club movie changes from book
Richard Osman clarified that the film version of “The Thursday Murder Club” will deviate from its original book.
In a chat with Marina Hyde on “The Rest Is Entertainment” podcast, Osman discussed the degree of creative freedom authors have when their works are transformed into screen adaptations.
“It’s a trade-off, really,” he said on February 6.
With “The Thursday Murder Club”, we managed to sell it without any prior reputation since it hadn’t been released yet.
Diverse groups expressed interest, some even proposed a condition where they would hand over full creative control. However, I was not inclined to take on that responsibility and write the entire project myself.
The rights to the book were ultimately acquired by Amblin, Steven Spielberg’s production company.
As a devoted admirer, I excitedly shared that when Amblin and the legendary Spielberg arrived, they confidently declared, “Without a doubt, this project will take place in England, and we’re ready to confirm that for you. However, another talented writer will be crafting the script.” (Osman’s words)
The movie, set for release on Netflix, is helmed by Chris Columbus – director of “Home Alone” – in collaboration with Katy Brand, who also contributed to the screenplay, known for her work in “Good Luck To You, Leo Grande”.
Osman affirmed that the film follows the storyline from the initial book in his series, but it won’t be an exact replica.
According to him, while the storyline of the movie adaptation of “The Thursday Murder Club” is primarily drawn from the first novel, there are some variations as adjustments must be made.
I believe it would be challenging for them if I were constantly checking up on them every few seconds, restricting what they can and cannot do.
In a simple and engaging rephrase: This book series focuses on four retirees living in a retirement home in Kent who have a hobby of solving mysteries, only to find themselves unexpectedly entangled in an actual murder case.
In this captivating movie, I find myself starring alongside the extraordinary Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley in our quartet of main characters. The supporting cast includes the talented David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce, Daniel Mays, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes.
The Thursday Murder Club is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2025.
