Richard Osman reveals BBC show’s camera kit was stolen and bizarrely returned

As a dedicated fan, I find Richard Osman‘s anecdotes from his days on Total Wipeout absolutely captivating! It’s not every day you hear about stolen camera equipment mysteriously returning within hours, especially when you’re not insured! The sheer audacity of the thief, or thieves, to swipe equipment and then return it as if nothing happened is almost comical. I can just imagine Osman and the crew, scratching their heads in bewilderment, wondering if they should call the police or the Tooth Fairy!

Richard Osman recently recounted an unusual experience during his tenure on Total Wipeout, describing an instance where the equipment of the camera crew mysteriously vanished, only to reappear later on the same day.

As an enthusiastic viewer, I had the pleasure of witnessing that from 2009 to 2011, I was part of the team responsible for crafting the scripts for a thrilling BBC show. Known as “Total Wipeout,” this program featured Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram as hosts. In this exciting production, contestants put themselves to the test by attempting physically demanding challenges in the hopes of pocketing a generous cash prize.

On his and Marina Hyde’s podcast, “The Rest is Entertainment”, Osman narrated a tale where the team arrived at work one day to discover that all their gear was nowhere to be found.

One time, when we arrived, all our camera gear was missing, as Osman remembered. It was around 8 in the morning, and our intermediary, who acted as a go-between for us, informed us that everything had been taken.

“We go, ‘Oh, okay. We probably need to hire some more stuff as we’re insured.’ And he goes, ‘I’m not sure we are insured.'”

Osman mentioned afterwards, they requested the person to procure fresh gear for the continuation of filming.

He added, “I told you I’d complete it in an hour,” and indeed, just then, the original equipment suddenly arrived.

“Anyway, stuff like that would happen on that show.”

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but cheer for the remarkable journey of Richard Osman. He’s not only made a name for himself through his engaging co-hosting on the popular show, Pointless, which he parted ways with in 2022, but also with the creation of Richard Osman’s House of Games. This innovative program brings together an ever-changing roster of celebrities, challenging them to solve a myriad of brain-teasing puzzles.

Apart from that, he’s currently a published author as well, with his first book “The Thursday Murder Club” slated for adaptation into a full-length movie.

In this film, a stellar group of actors make up the main cast: Ben Kingsley plays Ibrahim, Helen Mirren is Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan portrays Ron, while Celia Imrie takes on the role of Joyce – all of them detectives working as amateurs.

Alongside Richard E Grant, David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, Sarah Niles, Ingrid Oliver, Tom Ellis, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes, they will also be accompanied by several other stars.

Pryce will play Elizabeth’s husband Stephen, while Grant is playing a “baddie”.

In the meantime, Oliver has been chosen to portray Joyce’s daughter Joanna, Ackie will take on the role of police officer Donna, and the character of Donna’s mother Patrice will be played by Ted Lasso’s Niles.
