Richard Osman explains why he didn’t write Netflix’s Thursday Murder Club movie

Richard Osman has disclosed the explanation behind his absence from the scriptwriting process of the upcoming Thursday Murder Club film on Netflix this year.

Previously known for hosting “Pointless” and writing the murder mystery book series, the individual now acts as an executive producer in the making of the movie version. Notably, this production is being directed by Chris Columbus, famously recognized for his work on “Home Alone”. Alongside Columbus, Katy Brand contributes to the film’s scriptwriting.

Speaking on BBC Bookclub, Osman said not writing the script was “a deliberate choice”.

“I wasn’t involved in the script or anything like that,” he said.

As a passionate gamer, I consciously opted out since immersion is everything for me. Honestly, engaging with such activities seems more like a distraction from the creative flow I get while penning another book. So, I chose to let it be, focusing on my writing journey instead.

Osman, currently in the middle of composing the fifth installment in the series of “Thursday Murder Club,” has pondered about how attaching a well-known figure to the narrative has influenced his creative process.

In the Netflix film featuring the amateur detective quartet, an illustrious ensemble of actors has been assembled for the leading roles. Among them are Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley, portraying the main characters.

Reflecting on the experience, Osman found it captivating to begin writing his fifth book straight after wrapping up on set, having witnessed a scene featuring Pierce Brosnan and Sir Ben Kingsley portraying characters named Ron and Ibrahim.

At the outset of writing this scene, a mental image of Ben Kingsley popped into my mind, but I quickly realized, “I’ve got Ibrahim figured out, after all these years, I know him inside and out.

He subsequently mentioned: “Incidentally, Sir Ben Kingsley is a remarkable match, don’t you think? But the individual whom I hold dear isn’t that person. For a fleeting moment, there was a slight apprehension within me, but then I recollected who those characters truly were.

Additionally, Osman shared that the Netflix mystery series is scheduled for release towards the end of this year, as production was completed last summer.

He confirmed that filming has been wrapped up during the summer of 2024, which means the movie is set to release in the year 2025.

The Thursday Murder Club does not yet have a release date.
