Richard Osman breaks silence over The Thursday Murder Club movie’s controversial Bogdan change

The Thursday Murder Club spoilers follow.

Author Richard Osman, from The Thursday Murder Club series, has finally spoken out about the contentious alteration made to one of the character’s portrayals in the movie adaptation.

In this adaptation of Osman’s 2020 novel, four retirees living in a senior center delve into detective work when they take on the challenge of unraveling a local mystery within their community.

Despite the film’s success following its debut on Netflix a week ago, there has been some debate surrounding its portrayal of Henry Lloyd-Hughes’s character Bogdan, a key figure in the main investigation.

In a light-hearted tone, Osman discussed the film for the first time in his newsletter with Penguin Random House, expressing his delight that numerous people worldwide had taken pleasure in it, stating: “First off, let’s talk about the movie. I am absolutely thrilled to know that so many of you have enjoyed it immensely.

In his explanation, he humorously acknowledged that the newsletter was about a book compared to its movie adaptation, specifically highlighting the variations between the two, as suggested by the title “#JusticeForBogdan”.

In the movie, an argumentative shift resulted in the on-screen character being apprehended for murdering Tony Curran, a stark contrast to the book where his wrongdoings remained hidden, even though Stephen managed to discern his culpability.

In subsequent stories, Bogdan becomes an important character within the Club, but it seems doubtful that he’ll reappear in future movie adaptations due to his ending in the initial release.

Fans of the novel heavily criticized the changes, with one expressing their disapproval on platform X: “Fuming about the way they handled the character’s arrest in the climax. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.

A different viewer expressed their disappointment by saying, “Dear Netflix, the treatment of Bogdan was inexcusable,” and another commented, “I can’t believe what happened to Bogdan! It was such a disappointing twist, ruined it for me.
