Richard Madeley pulls out of Good Morning Britain – with familiar face forced to step in to host alongside Kate Garraway
As a seasoned viewer and ardent fan of Good Morning Britain, I must say I am thrilled to see Sean Fletcher stepping into new anchor roles. His chemistry with Kate Garraway is palpable and his presence on the show has been long overdue. Richard Madeley’s absence seems temporary, but I truly hope he recovers swiftly.
On Tuesday morning, Richard Madeley was absent from his regular position on the Good Morning Britain discussion panel, instead being replaced by Sean Fletcher.
At the start of the daytime program, Kate Garraway, aged 57, acknowledged her co-host’s absence and shared that Sean, who is also 50 years old, wasn’t aware he was hosting the ITV show.
She announced: ‘Good morning! It appears that Richard Madeley had planned to join us today, but unfortunately, he’s under the weather. Instead, we have the delightful Sean with us, which is truly great news!’
Kate asked when Sean learned that he would be replacing Richard, aged 68, at short notice, and Sean admitted it was a sudden development.
He said: “I wish Richard the best, then in the morning, I check the running schedule from home. I see my initial next to the stories I’ve written. But I also saw it on other stories. I thought there must be an error or a typing mistake!”
After taking another glance at the schedule, it became apparent to him that he would be co-hosting the show with Kate.
Sean added: ‘Suddenly I realised, I had seven missed calls and I realised that something was up.’
Even though Sean’s preparation seemed hasty at the last moment, he confessed that he enjoyed hosting the program and humorously stated that it was like moving from the sidelines of reporting to playing actively in the game.
After that, Kate once more expressed her well wishes towards Richard, telling the audience, “Just as you all suggest, we hope Richard will feel better soon.”
Sean also told viewers that before he went on air, bosses questioned whether or not he had a tie.
Grinning, he remarked: “Indeed, they tied a striped tie on me that was flashing! In fact, while we were going over the news headlines, I was switching my tie.”
It appears that viewers were not opposed to the changes made to the presenting team, with several requesting these adjustments to become permanent.
One fan wrote: ‘At last, @SeanFletcherTV is in the hot seat. Llongyfarchiadau Sean. I’ve been saying for ages to give you a chance in the main presenter’s seat.’
It’s wonderful that Sean Fletcher is hosting today; he truly deserves more opportunities as an anchor and complements Kate Garraway exceptionally well.

Excited by the shift, another spectator expressed: “I’m loving Sean Fletcher on TV now! Wishing Richard a speedy recovery.”
Richard’s non-appearance on the show follows an embarrassing mistake during his interview with Jennie McAlpine, where he mistakenly stated she was four years older than she actually is. As a result, Kate Garraway had to take over.
On Monday’s afternoon broadcast, Jennie, aged 40, made an appearance as a special guest to talk about her character, Fizz Dobbs, and her long-running role of 23 years on the soap opera set in the cobblestones.
Yet, Richard inadvertently made the actress appear older by four years while talking about how long she’s been on the show.
In that captivating conversation, I couldn’t help but be swept away by Richard’s words when he asked, “Has it seemed like 27 years since you first joined Coronation Street, longer even than Hilda Ogden and Elsie Tanner?” It’s mind-blowing to think about!
After that, the actress showed signs of annoyance by rolling her eyes and fell quiet. However, it was Kate who eventually intervened, setting the record straight by stating, “It’s been 23 years.”
23 long years have passed since I’ve been able to express this, but here goes: “I’m sorry for every one of those 23 years, Jennie. Does it feel like that much time has gone by?”
To which Jennie swiped back with: ’23 yeah, don’t age me that much Richard.’
