Richard Hammond: Being a Male TV Presenter is ‘Catastrophic for Mental Health’

Richard Hammond admitted his less-than-appealing characteristics and voiced concerns about the impact on mental health that comes with being a television host, particularly for men.

55-year-old Jeremy Clarkson, the previous host of Top Gear, recently shared personal insights with his daughter Izzy on a podcast they co-hosted, just weeks following the announcement of his divorce from his wife Mindy after 28 years of marriage.

On the “Who We Are Now” podcast, Steve Jones, a well-known Welsh host, joined the father-daughter pair. His presence sparked Richard to reveal an honest admission.

Richard stated, “For a man, it’s important to maintain mental clarity and overall fitness. I believe that the role of a television presenter, particularly for men, can be overwhelming.

Moving forward with the discussion about how his television career has affected him, Richard mentioned: ‘Over a span of 36 years, my masculine pride has been validated by some of the most detrimental characteristics we could display.’

I’ve been motivated to share my thoughts, as I’ve been led to believe that they are interesting and important enough to captivate an audience of 365 million people. However, it could potentially turn out to be quite overwhelming.

In a playful manner, the presenter quipped, “Of course I’m perfect!” Then, adopting a slightly breathless tone, he said, “Absolutely, well-adjusted and content.

Initially, the presenter of Formula One, Steve, pursued a career in modeling and was spotted twice by talent scouts. Furthermore, Richard found Steve’s handsome appearance reminiscent of his own.

Richard expressed his intention, “I want to place something quite hefty in this spot,” he started. “The total of your talents, as a TV host and a model, as someone scouted twice but ultimately turned down, is what I’m considering.

In the past, I was a television host while you began your presenting career. Upon seeing him, I couldn’t help but think, “Darn, check him out, I mean really look at him.” Inside, I found myself musing, “Well, he’s Welsh and handsome, not often is he referred to as the ‘Welsh hunk’, instead of the ‘Brummie hunk’, Richard Hammond.

In the course of the episode, it was later mentioned that Steve enjoys keeping himself occupied, a statement to which Richard once more alluded to Steve’s appearance.

Richard stated, “I dislike having free time since much of what I do as a TV presenter seems to be a form of compensation for me.

‘I am shorter, of course I’m shorter than you. Thank you nature.’

The remark seemed unexpected to Izzy, prompting her to inquire, “Are you alright? Shall we discuss it? You seem to be disclosing quite a bit.

In my own words, I shared that my comments on Steve’s appearance stemmed from a curiosity about whether Steve had ever pondered the possibility that women might be drawn to him more for his physical attributes than for who he truly is.

After Steve had left, Izzy readdressed the issue as the pair wrapped up the episode. 

She asked, ‘Shall we discuss something? I don’t believe you’re envious of Steve, but I sense you might be troubled by his good looks.’

Richard remarked, ‘You can’t help but notice him when he enters a room, as if saying “Look, we belong to the same family!”. If I were an alien, I would surely conclude, “Those two are distinct species apart.”‘

The open admission occurred within a fortnight of him verifying that he parted ways with his spouse Mindy, and had been residing in a barn located exterior their residence since August.

For approximately 18 months, Richard tirelessly attempted every possible solution to salvage his marriage with Mindy. Eventually, he came to terms with the fact that their relationship had reached an irreversible end.

According to a source, he exhausted all options. He contemplated the possibility of living apart while sharing the same residence, but Mindy insisted on a complete separation through a divorce.

‘He even whisked her away to the South of France to patch things up, but it just didn’t work.’

In August 2023, despite all his efforts to keep it, Richard found himself relocating to a renovated barn within his ancestral home, Bollitree Castle in Herefordshire.

Currently, Mindy admitted that she’s reached her limit, and as a result, Richard has moved to a temporary dwelling nearby, convenient for his work at The Smallest Cog, his motor business.

Previously this month, Richard publicly acknowledged their separation on a platform previously named Twitter, following 23 years of matrimony.

He wrote: ‘Here’s a small note from us. This Christmas, we celebrated as a family, and this coming year, our family structure may change slightly.’

As a devoted partner reflecting on our shared journey, I can’t help but look back at the extraordinary 28 years we’ve spent together, filled with love, laughter, and the creation of two exceptional daughters. Yet, it seems our path is diverging now.

‘We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created.’
