Richard Curtis admits ‘it’s a joy’ to make a film WITHOUT Hugh Grant after revealing he was against the actor’s casting in Four Weddings And A Funeral because he was ‘too posh and too handsome’
As a die-hard fan of Richard Curtis‘ work, I must say that his journey through filmmaking is nothing short of captivating. His ability to adapt and evolve, even when it comes to working without the charismatic Hugh Grant, showcases his versatility as a director.
Together, they’ve been involved in creating seven movies that were box-office sensations, with several of these being among the highest-grossing films ever made.
But director Richard Curtis says it’s a ‘joy’ to be making a film without Hugh Grant in it.
The team comprising of the director and actor have collaborated on projects such as Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Bridget Jones’ Diary collectively.
And they’ve just wrapped on filming the fourth installment Bridget Jones: Made About the Boy.
However, during an interview with Radio Times, Curtis, 68, expressed that he’s never had a desire to collaborate with Hugh Grant, 64, as he found him ‘overly refined and good-looking’.
He said: ‘I’m just taking advantage of how many great actors there are out there.
‘But casting has always been a revelation from the start of my film career.
In my professional perspective, when we embarked on the production of “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” I expressed skepticism about Hugh Grant’s involvement, stating, “Over my dead body will he be in my films.” At the time, I found his aristocratic demeanor and striking good looks to be overly refined for the type of movies I was aiming to create.
During his audition, he surpassed everyone else by a significant margin, yet I resisted this fact initially. However, upon our first screening of the movie, it became evident that my initial judgment was incorrect; indeed, he proved to be the pivotal element in the entire production.
Currently, I’m finding immense pleasure in creating a film without his presence. Admittedly, he could have played an effective antagonist in the story.
The romantic comedy “Four Weddings and a Funeral” is widely regarded as one of the greatest British romantic comedies ever made, which significantly boosted Hugh Grant’s reputation as a prominent leading man during the 1990s.
The movie subsequently earned a staggering $245 million globally and received nominations for both Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
Earlier this month Hugh presented Richard with a Governors Award.
During the presentation, he mentioned: “One might expect, as many of his movies revolved around love, that his directing style would be characterized by tenderness, softness, and a fluffy feel. However, this was not the case.
‘You would have been quite wrong.
As a devoted follower, his advice remains deeply ingrained in my heart – phrases like, “Now, let’s add a touch of humor” and “Fear not, we can work around you.
‘The producer liked me and wanted me, and the money people wanted me.
The role I sought was the one individual who expressed no desire for my participation, and surprisingly displayed immediate and intense hostility toward me, going as far as employing all means at his disposal to prevent me from landing that part was the playwright.
‘It is this ar****** who we are honoured to honour tonight.’
Presently, Richard is debuting his newest production titled “That Christmas.” This heartwarming Netflix animated series features the talented trio of Brian Cox, Bill Nighy, and Jodie Whittaker.
He said it’s been great to work on something different.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the multicultural essence of this production. Working alongside the talented Guz Khan and Lolly Adefope from this vibrant acting community in our country has been an absolute pleasure.
In an earlier conversation with The Times, Richard explained why he wasn’t keen on casting Hugh Grant for the lead role in the comedy-romance movie. He stated, “I strongly opposed Hugh Grant. In my mind, I envisioned a character less glamorous because I’m quite unglamorous myself.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating who would bring my favorite character to life, and let me tell you, the screenwriter had quite a task on their hands! They shared that they spoke with roughly 70 individuals for the role, but finding someone with just the right blend of charisma and quick-wittedness proved to be quite challenging.
Hugh grasped it immediately. Despite seeming lazy and inept in his acting abilities, he put an incredible amount of effort into each line, as stated.
As a dedicated follower of my passion for acting at the tender age of 32, I found myself contemplating stepping away from the limelight. However, when I stumbled upon the humorous script of Four Weddings, I couldn’t resist the allure of the protagonist and decided to give it another go.
Duncan Kenworthy, who made his debut as a film producer with Four Weddings, reminisced about the time when Hugh presented a recording of his amusing best man speech from his brother’s wedding.
He added that the team wrote ‘wedding attire’ on the UK premiere invitation, with roughly 10 per cent coming in wedding dresses.
The producer explained how Liz Hurley’s unconventional costume significantly contributed to the film’s triumph. “Well, you can’t forget about Liz Hurley’s outfit, which wasn’t exactly a wedding gown – more like an illusion of one. It turned out to be quite beneficial for us as she was all over the newspapers for a week,” he stated.
In my opinion as a lifestyle enthusiast, the timeless allure of Liz’s renowned dress, adorned with grand golden safety pins and a captivating side slit, continues to resonate strongly in fashion circles even today.
