Richard Branson’s son Sam surprises grieving family with a new dog as he shares heartbreaking decision behind name choice following his mother’s death

Following the recent passing of his mother, Joan, Richard Branson’s son, Sam, brought some joy to his family at Christmas with a surprise new puppy.

The 40-year-old singer explained the sad story behind choosing the name for their dog, following the recent passing of Joan at age 80.

The actor announced the arrival of their new puppy, Luna, on Facebook with a sweet photo, writing, “Welcome to the family!”

My mum always told me she loved me endlessly – she’d say ‘I love you to the moon and back!’ So, I decided to surprise my family with a new baby this Christmas, and we’ve named him or her after her.

‘I hope you all have a magical one, filled with love, laughter and gratitude.

He finished by sending his heartfelt condolences to anyone grieving, offering a warm embrace and assuring them that their loved ones remain with us in memory. He expressed his deep care and support to everyone affected.

Over the festivities, the family put on a brave face during their first Christmas without Joan.

Sam shared a photo on Instagram of his kids’ Elves on the Shelf after they playfully filled the toilet with cereal. He captioned it with a simple ‘Merry Christmas everyone’.

Richard also shares daughter Holly, 43, with his late wife, to whom he was married for 36, years.

Sir Richard, age 76, recently honored his wife in remembrance of their 36th wedding anniversary.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Richard Branson celebrated his wedding anniversary with Joan.

‘I still remember mine and Joan’s wedding like it was yesterday. 

I don’t remember exactly what I said to her when these pictures were taken at her 80th birthday party, but it definitely made her happy!

In a touching remembrance, Sir Richard also pointed out that today was a special date for his family – it marked not only a personal loss, but also the anniversary of his daughter Holly’s wedding to Freddie Andrewes, and the birthday of his grandchildren, twins Etta and Artie.

The photos of the couple laughing were taken only a few months before Joan passed away.

Sir Richard announced his mother’s death on November 25th, describing her as a loving mother and grandmother, and his closest friend.

He wrote: ‘Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.

‘She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for.

‘She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x.’
