Richard Branson has described his grief as ‘uncomplicated’ after the passing of his wife, Joan, who died last month at the age of 80.
The 75-year-old business leader described his 36-year marriage as a loving partnership, saying he and his wife always made an effort to express their affection and create lasting memories together.
On Tuesday, Richard posted a photo on Instagram of himself with Joan and their children, Holly, 43, and Sam, 40, accompanied by a heartfelt message.
My sister, Vanessa Branson, explained that we’re feeling a natural grief, as our relationships with Joan were so full of love and happy memories. We always made time for each other, shared our feelings, and created wonderful experiences together.
It really reminded me how crucial it is to maintain good relationships with the people in your life, because you never know when you might lose the chance. Life is fleeting.
Last week, the couple’s daughter, Holly, paid a heartfelt tribute to her mother, remembering the shock and sadness she felt after her passing. She described her mother as a uniquely wonderful and kind person.

Holly shared childhood photos of her mother, Joan, and said her family is grateful for the support they’ve received after Joan’s death. They feel overwhelmed by the kindness shown to them during this difficult time.
It’s been hard to find the right words to express 44 years of unwavering love, so it took me a couple of weeks to write this post.
My mum was truly incredible. She had a way of making everyone around her feel loved and cherished, and she always made us – me, Freddie, Sam, Bellie, Dad, and her grandchildren – feel like the most important people in the world. I’m so grateful for the love she gave us and how much she showed she cared.
We all intellectually know our parents won’t live forever, but it’s still shocking when it happens. It’s amazing how time can start to ease the pain, even in just a couple of weeks.
After the first wave of sadness, I now feel incredibly thankful for my wonderful mother. She was so kind, loving, and always showed us how much she cared.
Mom, you’re incredibly special – truly one of a kind. I’m really trying to follow your example more and more each day. Just the other day, I was shopping with Etta and I let her pick out a little more than I usually would.
Etta noticed I was acting like my grandmother, Amma, and pointed it out. That’s exactly what I’m hoping for! I want to embody her qualities every day so I can be the best wife, mother, and eventually, grandmother, possible.
I’m so grateful for all the kind wishes, cards, flowers, and hugs I’ve received over the past few weeks.

I haven’t been able to respond to all the messages, but I’ve read every single one, and they’ve truly meant the world to us. We’re feeling so much love and support from people everywhere.
On Tuesday, Richard gave a heartbreaking update on his grief, following his wife’s passing.
She then posted a couple of adorable photos of them on Instagram, along with a thank you message to her friends, fans, and followers for all their support.
In a heartfelt message, Richard shared that his family wants to focus on remembering and celebrating Joan’s life. He also expressed how lucky he felt to have known and loved his late wife.
We’re incredibly grateful for all the kind messages about Joan. Our family is deeply touched by the overwhelming support and love everyone has shown us. It’s a huge comfort to us all.
Our family is now focused on celebrating Joan and remembering the joy she brought to our lives. I’m incredibly grateful for the time I had with her.
It was always such a pleasure being with her, and so many of your kind messages reflected that. Sending lots of love to everyone who has reached out. We’re also thinking of those who have recently lost loved ones, and I’m sure Joan would want me to pass on her sympathy as well.
His announcement received a lot of love from friends. Naomi Campbell responded with several dove emojis, while Natalie Pinkham and Lizzie Cundy both praised his photos and message as beautiful and shared their support.
