Richard Armitage, famous for his work in television and films like Missing You and The Hobbit trilogy, is now joining a talented cast to perform in a well-known and beloved show.
The actor has been cast as King Herod in a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the hit rock opera created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
The show will be performed at the Palladium Theatre in London, featuring Richard Armitage and Sam Ryder, who previously announced he would play Jesus.

While Armitage will be part of the show, he’s only performing for a limited time. The role of King Herod will actually be played by six different actors throughout the musical’s entire run. The production starts on June 20th and ends on September 5th.
Several actors will be taking on the role this summer. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, famous for his work on Modern Family, will perform from June 20th to July 11th, followed by Simon Russell Beale from July 13th to 25th. Then, Armitage will be performing from July 27th to August 1st.

Boy George will be taking over from Armitage in the show, performing from August 3rd to 15th. Then, Layton Williams, known from Strictly Come Dancing, will be on stage from August 17th to 29th. Finally, Julian Clary, famous for Taskmaster, will finish the season with performances from August 31st to September 5th.
Director Tim Sheader announced his excitement about six talented artists who will each play the flamboyant and dangerous King Herod, with a playfully dramatic twist: they’ll be asking Jesus to walk on water – right in their swimming pools.

The director, who also led the 2016 production at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, explained that if audiences choose to attend any performance, the actors will briefly pause the show’s dazzling momentum to acknowledge them.
Jesus Christ Superstar first appeared on stage in 1971, after being released as a concept album in 1970. The musical tells the story of the last days of Jesus Christ, but from the perspective of Judas Iscariot.
Jesus Christ Superstar plays at London’s Palladium Theatre from 20 June until 5 September.
