Director Rian Johnson is best known recently for his Knives Out series. The latest film, Wake Up Dead Man, will be in theaters soon and will then be available to stream on Netflix in December. TopMob recently interviewed Johnson about this third installment and got an update on the fourth movie, as well as his reasons for not planning out the entire series in advance. Here’s a summary of what he said.
With people revisiting Knives Out, the third film, Wake Up Dead Man, is about to hit theaters. Initial reactions to Knives Out 3 have been extremely positive, suggesting the mystery franchise will continue for quite some time. In the video above, Johnson discussed the upcoming movie with TopMob and, when asked about a fourth installment, he revealed:
Not really, we’ve barely begun. I’ve just started brainstorming a few ideas, but we haven’t started full development yet. In fact, I plan to make an original film before revisiting this project. I think it’s best not to decide on the next film until I’m ready to start writing and making it.
I completely understand this approach. Instead of rushing to create more Knives Out sequels just to make a profit, Johnson is prioritizing a strong and engaging story. Because he’s also working on a new film separate from the Daniel Craig series, it’s likely to take some time before we see the fourth Knives Out movie.
You know, I was listening to Rian Johnson talk about the Knives Out films, and it really struck me why he doesn’t plan them out too far in advance. He explained it’s because a lot of the story ideas actually come from current events and what’s happening in the world around us. He basically builds the mysteries around what’s fresh in our minds, which makes total sense!
These films often reflect current events and try to capture what people are thinking about at the time. Because of this, I’m waiting to fully explore the topic until I begin writing, so I can best capture the present moment.
Fans who have enjoyed the Benoit Blanc mysteries so far will agree that Rian Johnson is making a smart choice. Glass Onion, especially, felt very current because it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep each new movie relevant to what’s happening in the world, Johnson needs to write them one at a time, rather than planning sequels in advance.

Rian Johnson’s recent statements will likely lead people to wonder what film he’s planning before Knives Out 4. Many fans are still hoping his Star Wars trilogy happens, especially since The Last Jedi was considered a bold and brilliant film. However, there haven’t been any updates about that project recently.
The next Knives Out mystery, titled Wake Up Dead Man, will be in theaters November 26th, 2025, and will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 12th. Fans will need to wait for more details about the fourth movie in the series.
