Rhys Darby To Bring Back A Legacy Character In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3
As a longtime Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over episodes and comic books, I am thrilled about Rhys Darby joining Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! With such an extensive library of characters, the possibilities are virtually endless.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is reviving characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, such as Scotty (played by Martin Quinn), Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), and Dr. Roger Korby, portrayed by Cillian O’Sullivan who is also Nurse Christine Chapel’s former fiance. At New York Comic Con [via Whatculture], it was revealed that Rhys Darby, known for shows like Our Flag Means Death and Flight of the Conchords, will appear in season three with a recurring role related to legacy characters. This news has fans speculating about who this actor might portray.
On Paramount+’s X page, the Star Trek announcement sparked a lot of excitement among fans who started guessing who this new character might represent. Some made assumptions that it could be Roger Korby, but many more votes went to Trelane. Other suggestions included Gary Mitchell, Dr. Piper from his sole appearance in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” and even Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy.
It might seem premature to introduce Dr. McCoy as he won’t become Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise for another seven years. Before this, he was on planets like Dramia II and Capella IV. Dr. Piper could potentially return, but it doesn’t appear essential given his brief appearance in one episode and limited influence compared to characters like Trelane, who some consider as an early version of “Q.” Fans are eager to see how Captain Pike interacts with such a character.
Given that The Original Series didn’t feature a character like Q, and Darby is renowned for his wit and vigor, it seems Trelane would be an ideal fit for him. However, I’m hesitant to predict the role Darby might take on Strange New Worlds, as there are numerous characters from The Original Series that could make an appearance. With seventy-nine episodes, Strange New Worlds has a vast pool of characters to choose from.
