Rhys Darby Reveals How His Kiwi Accent Sabotaged His Love Life!
He’s the comedian, originally from New Zealand, who became well-known for his role as the bumbling manager Murray in the popular HBO series Flight of the Conchords.
Born with an exuberant New Zealand accent, Rhys Darby acknowledges that his distinctive voice has been a significant factor in his professional success. However, he now confesses that it didn’t fare well in the realm of love and relationships.
On the recent installment of The Project that aired on Friday, the 50-year-old individual shared reminiscences about his past courtship endeavors during his younger dating years.
He confessed, chuckling, that he often believed himself to be both amusing and distinct, but many women didn’t seem to appreciate his sense of humor.
Yet, the well-known comedian emphasized that his distinctive New Zealand accent served as a valuable tool when it came to eliciting laughter from audiences.
Over time, I’ve consistently showcased an exceptional, one-of-a-kind vocal style and have been known to create humorous, eccentric character voices. I often lend my voice to peculiar items or situations that might seem unusual.
Later this year, Rhys, currently residing in Los Angeles, has plans to perform a string of stand-up comedy shows in Australia.
Beginning on April 8th, his Australian tour will commence in Melbourne with several performances. Subsequently, he will travel to Adelaide, Canberra, and Newcastle.
Additional performances are scheduled for Wollongong, Sydney, and Perth in the coming days, with the final show taking place in Brisbane in May.
This week, it emerged that Rhys would participate in a charity concert to aid those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
On Inauguration Day, a concert titled “Concert for America” is being held to collect donations. These funds will be given to the California Community Foundation, a charity that assists with the recovery process following wildfires, particularly helping those who are the most vulnerable.
Concert for America will take place at The Town Hall in New York City on Monday, January 20, 2025.
The group consists of Jon Cryer and his wife Lisa Joyner, who are leading Los Angeles initiatives, as well as Melanie Lynskey with her partner Jason Ritter, Matt Walsh, and Rachel Bloom along with Melissa Rauch.
In addition, we have Abigail Spencer, D.L. Hughley, Jimmy O. Yang, Caroline Rhea, Ryan Hansen, Diane Farr, Paget Brewster, Rhys Darby, and Trae Crowder present as well.
They will livestream in to the program.
Additional virtual appearances by Julie Bowen, Tony Hale, Adam Scott, and Kate Walsh will be seen.
Yellowstone star Piper Perabo and actress Rosie Perez have already been added.
The performers at the concert include Wayne Brady, Rachel Bay Jones, Carly Hughes, and Cheyenne Jackson, with Michael Orland providing the music.

According to Deadline, viewers can still access the initial two seasons of the show through the streaming platform.
The spokesperson for the streaming platform stated: ‘Although Our Flag Means Death won’t be continuing with a third season featuring Max, we take immense pride in the delightful, humorous, and emotionally resonant tales that David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and their exceptional cast and crew have brought to fruition.’
Apart from that, we’d like to express our gratitude to the loyal fans who warmly accepted these narratives and fostered a beautiful, welcoming environment around the series.
Jenkins took to Instagram to comment on the latest development, saying he had ‘good news and bad.’
Jenkins mentioned that the positive aspect was spending two seasons in a fascinating, visually appealing world filled with some of the most talented actors and artists.
The fan community, known for its charm, played a crucial role in making the second season come to life. Their support truly mattered.
The bad news was that the show ‘won’t be returning for a third season,’ Jenkins said.
He noted, ‘We’ve been traveling under the gracious hospitality of Max’s team, and they were far from happy to witness our trip ending unexpectedly early.’
Jenkins expressed deep regret that he wouldn’t sail on the Revenge alongside his friends, many of whom are now like family to him.
