Rhys Darby is playing a familiar character in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but who?
As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of the Star Trek universe, I’ve developed a knack for deciphering hidden clues and teasing out intriguing connections between characters and plotlines. With Rhys Darby joining the cast of Strange New Worlds, I find myself once again drawn into the captivating game of guesswork that is Star Trek casting announcements.
In a fresh and engaging manner, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has incorporated characters from diverse parts of the Star Trek universe into their series. Notably, we’ve been introduced to younger iterations of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, George Kirk, James Kirk, a youthful Uhura (and Spock, indeed), and also Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner from Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Several characters from the vast expanse of Star Trek universe have appeared, some of whom we’ve grown quite familiar with over time. The series has hinted at the appearance of a young Khan Noonien Singh and a young Sybock, but their presence was more of a fleeting nod rather than a significant contribution to the storyline.
In the upcoming season three, we can expect to see more characters joining the cast, and Rhys Darby has been openly discussing this exciting development. It’s been officially confirmed at New York Comic Con, as reported by TrekMovie.com, that Darby will portray a character who is both familiar yet entirely new.
In Myers’ portrayal, the character seemed light-hearted, leaving us wondering who Darby might be emulating. Initially, Leonard “Bones” McCoy sprang to mind, given his New Zealand origin (shared with Darby) and recent portrayal by Karl Urban. However, Urban brings a more serious tone and isn’t as humorous as Darby.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice his knack for comedy in his roles. Could it be that he’s taking on a different character this time? Strange New Worlds seems to be an extension of the initial Star Trek pilot, delving deeper into the possibilities hinted at in the original filming. So, it stands to reason that we might encounter more characters from that pilot, introducing us to none other than Dr. Phil Boyce.
Initially, Boyce deviated from Darby’s usual expectations of an older and less humorous character. This narrowed our choices down to just one name: Trelane.
On a single occasion, we encountered Trelane, who was an incredibly capricious personality. His humor was abundant, and he possessed a knack for comedic delivery that made him seem like the perfect candidate for a comedian’s role in Star Trek.
He’s the kind of role that Darby would eat up. After all, if you remember his first appearance, you know just how bombastic and over-the-top Trelane is. Which is perfect for the New Zealand comedian.
It could be someone else, but if we had to bet money, we’re betting it on Trelane.
