Rhod Gilbert reveals double tragedy just months after getting the all-clear from Stage 4 head and neck cancer

Rhod Gilbert reveals double tragedy just months after getting the all-clear from Stage 4 head and neck cancer

As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in navigating life’s challenges and triumphs, I cannot help but feel deeply moved by the story of Rhod Gilbert. His journey, marked by resilience and humor in the face of adversity, is truly inspiring.

Rhod Gilbert shared that two individuals near to him passed away due to cancer, shortly following his clean bill of health.

In 2022, a well-known comedian from Wales, aged 56, was diagnosed with advanced stage head and neck cancer. He courageously fought this illness and received the good news of being cancer-free in October of the previous year.

In an open conversation with The Mirror, I found myself sharing a heart-wrenching turn of events that unfolded for me only a few short months after experiencing some truly delightful news.

During a break in his comedy act, Rhod learned that his friend had lost his battle with terminal cancer.

Additionally, he mentioned that he went to a funeral last week, which was for the father of one of his friends. Regrettably, this friend’s father had lost his life due to cancer as well.

This week, I attended a funeral for my friend’s father, who lost his battle with cancer. During a performance in Halifax, I received tragic news – another friend of mine had succumbed to the same disease.

Given that he was already receiving palliative care, his passing wasn’t entirely unexpected. Yet, it struck me at an unusual moment when I stepped off stage during intermission, glanced at my phone, and received a message saying simply, “He has passed away.

Last October, Rhod got his initial clean scan following his treatment for stage four cancer.

In July 2022, he received his diagnosis, and subsequently underwent treatment at the Velindre Cancer Center in Cardiff, which had been supporting his charitable endeavors for ten years prior to this medical event.

He had an operation for advanced cancer that affected his head and neck region, then went through cycles of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

In early April, he shared that his health status remains unchanged. He continues under the exceptional care at Velindre Cancer Center in Cardiff. Regular checkups are conducted every few weeks, but so far, everything is still looking positive.

I’m feeling fantastic, although I have numerous challenges that might stick with me forever, it’s anyone’s guess. Frankly, I don’t let it bother me too much!

“I’m present, feeling great, and each evening, it still feels surreal to be up here performing. It’s been only two years since my diagnosis, yet I find myself on stage now.

In 2024 and 2025, the comedian known as “the funnyman” will be taking his Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit tour across the United Kingdom. Interestingly, he mentions that his personal illness has impacted some elements of this particular show.

As an ardent admirer, I’d like to share Rhod’s insight: grapefruit, a symbol partially derived from the tumor that once resided in his neck, and another nod to the age-old wisdom, “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” This fruit now represents overcoming adversity and finding sweetness in the sour moments of life.

“When life begins to toss grapefruits your way, which I find particularly challenging, it’s actually a cheerful and inspiring spectacle.

In 2022, Rhod announced publicly through a social media post that he was facing cancer. This announcement came only a few days after he temporarily halted his tour.

As a dedicated supporter of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve had the privilege of traversing the globe, emceeing lively trivia events, and organizing side-splitting comedy galas, graced by some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Over the past decade, I’ve had the pleasure of encountering and forming connections with countless inspiring colleagues, patients, and their loved ones. This experience has significantly impacted my life.

Indeed, I never thought I’d find myself as a patient in this place, but now I can confidently say that there’s no one more capable of taking care of me than those around me.

“The care I’m getting from the NHS is amazing, yet I wouldn’t want this experience for anybody else…perhaps one day, I’ll emerge on the other side with a fresh comedy act and a lengthy monologue about orange drink.

‘Thank you everyone for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years).

“I’m going to step away for a bit, so you may not hear from me right now. This is because I need to concentrate on my healing process.
