Rey sequel movie is the latest Star Wars project to have troubles behind the scenes

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Star Wars saga, I must say that the latest news about the Rey movie leaves me feeling like I’m playing a never-ending game of Galactic Whack-a-Mole. It seems that every time a new writer or director is attached to a project, they disappear as quickly as an Ewok in a Wookiee’s arms!

According to Puck News, the creative mind behind hit series like “Peaky Blinders,” “The Veil,” “A Thousand Blows” and “This Town,” Steven Knight, has stepped away from his screenwriting role for an upcoming “Star Wars” film featuring Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley in the sequel trilogy. The plot will focus on Rey’s journey post-“The Rise of Skywalker,” as she endeavors to establish a new Jedi academy. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached to direct the project.

Initially, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson had been penning the script without Knight’s involvement. However, they were later replaced in the project. As reported by Variety, Disney is currently seeking fresh writing talent for the movie.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel disheartened when I hear about yet another potential Star Wars movie that’s fallen through the cracks. Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige had a vision for a Star Wars film, but it never materialized. The same goes for Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi’s project, which seems to be indefinitely postponed. Even Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had plans to helm a Rogue Squadron movie, but it’s vanished into the cosmos. Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss also had their own trilogies in the works, only to see them shelved. After The Rise of Skywalker, it seems that Disney is struggling to launch a new Star Wars movie, no matter how hard they try.

It might appear to us as if Disney is withholding information about the sequel movie for Rey, but could it really be that skilled writers like Lindelof and Knight are struggling so much behind the scenes that Disney feels compelled to part ways with them? What’s Disney’s motive here? Why do they announce projects in development that seem premature, risking potential shelving later on? Wouldn’t it make more sense for Disney to wait until a project is fully developed before making an announcement?

Daisy Ridley revealed that she joined the project following the initial concept discussion, but it’s unclear whether she was referring to Linedlof’s, Knight’s, or another idea they were collaborating on. As for the Star Wars films, their production process remains as mysterious as ever.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the continuation of Rey’s story, but it seems we might not get to witness it on the big screen until as late as 2025 at the very earliest. However, there’s a silver lining! We have another exciting addition coming our way: a sequel to The Mandalorian series titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. This one is slated for release in May 2026, so mark your calendars fellow gamers!
